Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - May 1, 1990, Winnipeg, Manitoba Congress fails abused report finds Washington a an Esti mated million elderly americans Are abused each often by their own but the govern ment has virtually ignored the a House of representatives subcommittee reported yester most cases of elder abuse go unreported because older people Are ashamed to admit their families abuse them or they fear reprisals if they the subcommittee on health and Lon term care elder abuse has been virtually ignored by the Federal even in the face of mounting Evi Dence of its scope and the report without meaningful Federal support to detect and treat elder remains a National murder the incidence of such abuse has increased from about one million victims annually in 1980 to Mil or five per cent of All older the panel Only about one of every eight cases is Down from the one in five cases reported in the subcommittee said its Survey of states and social workers found thousands of accounts of ranging from systematic theft of social Security cheques to violent physical abuse including rape and forty states reported that the problem continues to at a time when the Inci Dence of
