B 0 Winni Peg free press september neighbourhoods editor Maureen 6977292 Wayne free press Peg Venables says the need for some kind of program became evident in the last school vital Board studies ways to help teen parents in school by Terry Weber i metro reporter the vital school division is looking for a Way to make life a Little easier for teen parents who want to continue their school Board officials and administrators assistant superintendent Joan Dary said the division is about to launch a feasibility study to determine whether the Board can set up a teen Parent infant development program in certainly there Are enough teens out there who have Dary Dary said the possibility of such a pro Gram was raised by the Home economics supervisor for the Peg and has been approved for study by the school the Dary would be to investigate setting up a program similar to those in other school districts that offer support to teenage parents still attending Venables said the need for some kind of program became evident in the last school when it was Learned there were 24 students in the division who were known to have dropped out because of she there is very Little to support Young mothers who want to continue in there is no funding Avail Able to them if they Are under and out Side daycare is almost an they fall Between the she she added the division makes allowances to Send students who Are parents to schools in other divisions that have specialized pro but in Many cases the change is too much for the the reality when you remove them from their peer group and from their com its very hard for she they just dont parenting skills although work has yet to begin on the feasibility Dary said such a program could incorporate daycare needs As Well As parenting skills for teenagers who want to continue in school while raising i think the philosophy behind it is to enable the teenagers to finish their education and enable them to do so in proximity to their she for she daycare in certain schools could be one Way of addressing those she teenagers with Chil Dren dont have enough Money for daycare on their limiting their ability to free up enough time to return to an i school childcare she could enable the teenagers to attend classes without worry and allow them to spend any free time they have during the school Day with their such a pro Dary could also teach Parent ing skills either in conjunction with the Day care or by implementing classes As part of the academic its All question Marks right she Dary say when the feasibility study would be one of the problems in setting up such a she is the Lack of space in the divisions High the difficulty were facing is we have very crowded High schools in vital right she said the division May look at the possibility of working with Community service agencies or other school divisions if it decides to go ahead with the Board chairman Bob Bruce said the Board requested the feasibility study to get Niobe information about How a teen Parent infant program would work before making a decision on the we Felt it was too Short of notice to implement such a Bruce we really needed More on How it would High school
