Winnipeg Woodhaven just wants peace Over i have read various Media reports about Woodhaven and its resistance to a few months ago i met with some residents of Woodhaven about their i Learned that the Park and closed school site Are on the very land that was owned by the late Harriot Mcdermot before it was expropriated because she pay her this was commonplace years ago when the Metis owned Large maybe if this Church benefited people who can afford jets tick City Council would be More willing to forgo the Church Sara Brown Winnipeg no no Sale this the Manitoba tourism department sent me a great Deal of information on the Beautiful and very interesting places to in i was looking Forward to visiting the West half this especially Selkirk and win i was sent Beautiful big brochures and accommodation but not one Motel indicated the Price of their apparently they Are very reluctant to do so in Case they want to change the rates during the the managers of the motels could see fit to quote prices for the convenience of even though it May Cost them a Little extra to reprint in the accommodation guide when they increase the As they Are bound to the tax on motels is discouraging j have already written to the tourism min ister and know that he and his staff regret that the Motel managers do Hof see fit to make things better for visitors to the i djo Hope the nationwide rating system called Canada select will pm prove tourism much More in your province next in the i regret that i will not be visiting there under the present much As i had planned to do this v Lois argue Edmonton childrens spirits key to cultural renewal Marc free press Marc family members gather to mourn Joseph like Many people in the North Roberta Nep Inak is mourn ing the Joss of Joseph the 13yearold boy who was fatally shot in a Gan related incident during the she wrote this piece by Roberta Nep Inak special to the free press i am so mad arid upset right because no one cares about 1 its everyone for that Ever since i can growing up Here in the North end has been hard and it still i cant understand Many of the things that go Why peo ple Hurt each Why my own kind is so so Distant from one its so on july at in the morning a Young innocent boy had dreams was he was shot in the Back because he was mistaken for a gang he and along with that so did his he probably did it expect a whole lot from just to live and play and be your everyday Happy and now Hes and for what Doest anybody care Why cant we come together and save our give them give them guidance and the willingness to achieve their these gangs themselves Are Vic Tims of a lost if they had a sense of belonging i dont think they would be where they Are knowing who you Are and were you come from is a very important tool in there once was a Village and within this Village lived kind respectful they All looked out for each when some one needed food it was Given to when someone was sick they would be looked after by a Medicine there was no Alco hol in this there was no they would celebrate a a the food that was captured by the they did things together and also for each they were Strong close your eyes and see them dancing for i know these people still they live in our our hearts and our they Are mourn ing to be to share with us their they Are our we should All find them within ourselves and allow them to exist to explore and to save our we need to help our children find their spirits so they can Fly and conquer the world in a positive i have two sons of my own and i will be damned if i will let any one steal their and any one who the first thing you have to do is say that you throw that bottle As far As you and grab hold of your life and the Power within we Are and we can be Strong together once Roberta Nep Inak is a 22year old resident of the North she is enrolled in a Job placement pro Gram with Ani Hinabe girls death defies easy answers by Dale Eisler Regina buried deep with in the Saskatchewan court of Appeal decision on Robert latimers second degree murder conviction of his daughter Tracy is a glimpse into the wrenching human tragedy of this it comes from the testimony at the trial of one police officer who investigated tracks death from Carbon monoxide poisoning at the hands of her father in october the account of the Ken Neth who interviewed gives us a sense of a fathers pain As he sees his severely disabled daughter suffer from cerebral the police officers account is prefaced by the words of chief Justice Edward who wrote a dissenting opinion to a ruling that upheld latimers murder conviction and it was Kaydas View that a 10year sentence for this crime was extreme and inconsistent with latimers rights under Section 12 of the charter of rights and which protects individuals from cruel and unusual Bayda says that Latimer did not commit an sordid killing motivated by some base impulse or Emo Tion such As selfishness or some combination of those rather he called it a compassionate act that resulted from seeing his daughter suffer Day in and Day out for 13 we can debate the morality of this Case and whether mercy killing has a place in Canadian but there can be no doubt that Robert Latimer was motivated by a fathers misguided and unjust perhaps in the eyes of the but surely consistent with the instincts of human nature and a fathers love for a suffering the depth of that emotion became Clear in the words of the disabled groups welcomed Robert latimers police officer As he explained the circumstances when he took latimers statement and ultimate everyone said the same that you were a very caring per a Good at the same we know that this was not a natural your daughter was in a great Deal of Lyons Tes there was no response from him at that i noticed that his eyes were Glassy with tears and i went this is not something you wanted and planned to you loved your daughter very at this Point he started nodding his head this is something that you Felt you had to do out of love for your int it Bob there was no i i can imagine this is very difficult for you and i feel bad you Only did what you Felt was Best for out of love for your Daugh again there was no reply int that right Bob there was no i noted that he was close to i said that what Hap int it int that right he my priority was to put her out of her and i that what you thought was want it he tears were coming freely at that Point and he started talking about her always being in pain and the suffering that she was going As we try to balance the moral complexities and Legal realities of this there Are no easy or pain less clearly we cannot justify or accept the wilful taking of a human if Ever we must be vigilant in this it is when the most vulnerable Are at its for that reason disabled groups across Canada Are applaud ing the Appeal judgment that upheld latimers they argue the importance of a disabled persons life must be recognized and receive equal Protection under the Law As anyone to absolve Latimer of his or to give him less of a sentence because Tracy was would be to devalue her we didst realize How Many in society undervalue the life of a disabled person until this we feel As if we had to speak for her life was says Mel Graham from the coun cil of canadians with disabilities in which had intervener status in the Latimer but just because those who speak for the disabled Welcome the Appeal decision it does in any Lessen the tragedy of the Latimer in Many respects this is a Case where Justice produces Only More a few hours after his Appeal had been turned Latimer turned himself Over to the local ramp detachment to begin serving a life unless his conviction is overturned by the supreme or parliament he can not be paroled for 10 already latimers Mark is preparing an application for an Appeal to the supreme court that he Hopes will be granted and heard this in a great believer in the checks and balances of the sys says someday i believe Bob will get the Relief he in the Latimer leaves behind a wife and three who have become the victims of a family torn apart by Dale Eisler is a Saskatchewan doonesbury by Garry Trudeau i want
