Strike viewed from new Angle profiles in dissent by Harry and Mildred Gutkin newest press 385 pages $25_ reviewed by Allan Levine a Winnipeg historian and writer few events have defined Winnipeg a history like the general strike of 1919. Its legacy divided the City a civic politics for at least 50 years after. For about six weeks in May and june of 1919, tens of thousands of workers walked off their jobs effectively shutting Down the City. When it was All Over and the combined Power of the Federal government police and establishment had broken the strike to men had been arrested on charges ranging from seditious conspiracy to inciting a riot. Nine were tried and six were eventually convicted and sent to prison for Brief terms. In this elegantly written Book aimed at a general audience Winni Eggers Harry and Mildred Gutkin examine our tumultuous labour history and the lives of the arrested strike leaders. Harry has written extensively on the history of the City a North end with an emphasis on Winnipeg a jewish Community. Mildred taught English literature at the University of Manitoba for 30 years. Several of the labour leaders profiled by the Yutkins Are still Well known including . Woodsworth one of the founders of the Kcf John Queen who later became Winnipeg mayor in 1935, and . Russell who was honoured Many years after the strike when a vocational school was named after him. Others such As Fred Dixon Bill Pritchard and George Armstrong have faded from memory. While the 1919 strike has not lacked its historians the Yutkins do offer a new twist on a familiar Story by probing the personal lives of the main participants. In particular their research into the role of Helen Armstrong George Armstrong a wife As Well As other women adds an important new dimension to the Saga. While the various strike leaders Woodsworth strike Leader were portrayed by the press and authorities As a United group of radicals and conspirators they were in fact As the Yutkins show quite diverse in their political religious and social views. Not All were adherents of communism nor did the majority want to Start a revolution. Their chief goal was simply to improve the lives of the working people whom they represented. The one flaw in this Book is in the collective biography format itself. As such this would be difficult to remedy unless the volume were organized differently. In each chapter As the Yutkins retell the Story of the strike from a different perspective they Are forced to repeat Many of the same facts and recount yet again the strikers arrest and trial. The general strike had a lasting effect on the lives of its leaders and their families. For most As the Yutkins Point out this moment in time was the Climax of their struggle for workers rights. A virtually every life a they write a ends in decline and fall in disappointment and at the same time by resurrecting several of the less Well known labour leaders profiles in dissent is a significant contribution to the literature of the strike.
