Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - May 25, 1997, Winnipeg, Manitoba Jennifer Clark Young voters can make difference Jennifer Clark has been involved in politics More than half her life. She is a Veteran of 11 Federal and provincial campaigns but never has she been so motivated. That a because the need for a change in leadership has never been so great. A Canada is Drifting Quot she says. A where the world used to celebrate our nation people in communities throughout Canada live in fear for their safety parents worry their children wont get a Good Job and the elderly worry that the health care they be paid for throughout their lives won t be there for them when they need it at 22, Jennifer has set two very lofty goals. She not Only wants to represent St. Boniface in the parliament of Canada but she wants to persuade Young voters they can make a difference. A i want to show the youth of Winnipeg that they can make a difference in How their City province and country is shaped a she says. A canadians should not be Content to sit Back and let the future younger canadians should be particularly interested in this election Jennifer says because decisions made today shape the country into the next millennium. A decisions on education could dictate what kind of jobs we get when we graduate Quot she says. A decisions on health care will determine the Quality of care we get Down the Road. A decisions on the Canada pension plan today will determine if it is even around when we retire and a vote on National Unity today could determine whether we live in a United Canada tomorrow or a fractured nowhere has the Lack of leadership been Felt More than in the ranks of the unemployed. The recession ended years ago and yet Canadas unemployment rate is still hovering around to per cent. Nearly 1.5 million people can to find work and still the liberals say they Are winning the employment Battle. The Liberal jobs record is proof that High taxes and old methods of government Job creation done to work in the new Economy. What the country needs is Young dynamic leadership that Only Jean Charest can provide. A if we re going to turn this country around we need Jean Charest and we need to do government differently a Jennifer says. Quot the Job creation climate can be dramatically improved through lower taxes deregulation and liberalized Trade right Here in but if the Economy is going to stay on course Over the longer term Jennifer believes Canadas education system has to be brought into the 21st Century. The current system continues to graduate too Many students who cannot find full time work. Canadas children Are falling further and further behind and the Federal liberals Are doing nothing about it. A progressive conservative government will not Only increase education funding but also set National standards and test for results. Income should not be a Barrier to getting a higher education nor should a Lack of tools. Canada must be prepared to take part in a knowledge based Economy. Jennifer believes a Good Job is the solution to Many of Canadas problems. She believes much of the crime that has invaded Many communities in Canada is being carried out by people who have Given up Hope. A the Best solution to crime problems is a Strong growing Economy that provides More jobs and Opportunity a Jennifer says. However that does not mean that Canada should go soft a or softer a on criminals. While prevention would remain the Cornerstone of the Canadian Justice system a progressive conservative government would ensure that those who commit serious crimes Are not Given More rights than those they have harmed. It would make the system More responsive to the needs of victims. Dugald re Marion St St. Boniface a a a a a a Federal election Riding Profilet. Boniface a is Manitoba prepares to vote in a National election june 2, the free press has invited candidates from the four major political parties to communicate directly with the people. A married with 2 children maps should poll voters on issues Denis Simard was born raised and educated in St. Boniface is married to Kathy and is the father of two daughters. Denis has been involved with the Reform party since 1991. Denis is a Strong supporter of my recall and believes that accountability to the voters is of the utmost importance. A in this age of rapid communication Telephone fax machines email it is not difficult to get in touch with a Large number of constituents and get their views on any subject. A i think that any elected my should be polling their constituents on All major issues and voting As directed by the people who pay their wages. Many maps once elected to Ottawa quickly begin to forget where they came from and Start spouting the party position on All matters to Curry favour with the party my pensions Are another irritant to Denis. Quot Why should our maps have the most lucrative pension plan in the world when asking the average Canadian to accept 70 per cent cup contribution increases wage rollbacks freezes and tax increases a liberals have raised taxes 36 times since 1993, costing canadians $24 billion an extra $3,000 per family of four a Only Reform party maps opt out of the pension so of 51 Reform maps have opted out who is watching the spending of our tax dollars every year the liberals like the conservatives before them hand out billions to special interest groups and political friends. We Are a country that has accumulated a debt of $600 billion through the mismanagement of our tax dollars by the old line parties. We Are paying Over $50 billion a year in interest payments on these Loans and yet the Liberal government continues to borrow Money to hand out to these special interest groups and associates. At the same time the liberals have Cut health care funding by 40 per cent so if you Are a political Friend. Done to worry but if you Are in need of a Hospital bed. Worry. In january of 1997, seniors were placed in hallways of Winnipeg hospitals due to bed closures. This is How liberals take care of the people who built our country. One of the first Liberal Campaign promises is to increase spending in the area of health care. In 1993, one of their first Campaign promises was to get rid of the get. We have 1.5 million unemployed two to three million underemployed and a half million who have Given up looking for work. Jean Chretien a analysis of unemployment a some Are Lucky. Some Are unlucky. That a life Quot Csc town Hall dec. La 1996 we canadians have had years and years of Liberal Lory Rule. Our thanks for this loyalty is High unemployment a staggering National debt a frightening increase in violent crime and a government totally out of touch with the people. Denis believes that maps elected to Ottawa should represent the interests of their constituents in Ottawa not the interests of Ottawa to their constituents. A being elected to Ottawa Means the people have put their Confidence and Trust in you. The very least you can do is serve them with running a Rubin Kantorovich marxist Leninist election questions As Manitoban prepare to go to the polls on june 2, Many people have questions about the process and the players. In the remaining weeks of the Campaign the free press will try to answer As Many of these questions As possible. Of you would like us to look into something for you please Call Glen Mackenzie at 697-7270 or Send your questions on the internet to Cit desk free press. Denis Simard a Strong voice for St. Boniface nip is the Only alternative the new democratic party under the leadership of Alexa Mcdonough is the Only alternative to the right Wing agendas of the Liberal Reform and conservative parties. The Liberal record since taking office in november 1993 is a record of broken promises. Approval of the free Trade agreement with the United states endorsement and strengthening of the drug Patent legislation and changing the goods and services tax into the blended sales tax is tax Are a few examples of these broken promises. The free Trade agreement the drug Patent legislation and the is or g and s tax have had the support of big business but they Are devastating for the average worker patient or consumer of goods and services. Calling an election in the Middle of Manitoba a flood crisis demonstrates the arrogance and insensitivity of the Chretien liberals. Where Are the National Day care and Home care programs where Are the jobs where Are reasonable drug prices where is the support for Post secondary education what happened to the promises made to Canadas native people what has this Liberal government done to eradicate poverty which has worsened especially for children during the Chretien governments tenure has the Chretien government strengthened medicare Only a Strong new democratic presence in Ottawa under Alexov Peter Carney nip leadership will ensure that the needs of Middle and Low income canadians will be met. Our party which was instrumental in the development of old age pensions and medicare is committed to work for the preservation of those programs and for extending publicly insured coverage of Home care and pharmaceuticals and replacing the discredited drug Patent Law which has caused drugs to become the fastest growing healthcare Cost. We Are committed to pressuring the Federal government to adopt targets to reduce unemployment and child and family poverty. We will fight for a Canadian with disabilities act that ensures consistent action co ordination and accountability at the Federal level. Alexa Mcdonough and Canadas nip will ensure that Young canadians have the opportunities for education they need by fighting for an immediate halt to the tragic cuts in Federal support for Community colleges and universities and by providing a student assistance program that would give All qualified students Access to Post secondary education without trapping them in debt for years after graduation. The nip will defend a fair Lon term Public pension plan to ensure that All canadians can look Forward to retirement. The nip is the Only party fighting to lower unemployment which during this Campaign is rising. The voters of St. Boniface have the Opportunity to Send a Strong message Back to Ottawa. By voting for the nip they will show that they agree that the nip is the Only party that is committed to improving the lot of All canadians not just allowing the Rich to become Richer at the expense of the less fortunate. Alexa and the nip believe that in a time of reduced deficits it is time to reinvest in Canadas future with improved programs and reduced taxes for Canadas Low and Middle income earners who Are currently paying an unfair proportion of All government costs. A Strong nip presence in Ottawa will ensure that the next government will be held accountable for its broken promises and destructive policies.
