Unsafe for kids Halifax up a a surprising number of Canadian families still own baby walkers even though they re dangerous and illegal. And almost a Quarter of families in a three year study had smoke detectors that did no to work. Those Are two of the Early findings of a study on childhood injuries conducted in part by Halifax paediatrician or. John Leblanc. The study which has a year to go focuses on injuries at Home such As Burns Falls and poisoning and compares the Homes of infants and toddlers who have suffered injuries with those who Haven to. A we done to yet really have a Good appreciation in the Public of How important injuries Are As a cause of our children getting Hurt and dying a a said Leblanc. He Hopes to prove that education can help make Homes safer. More than 1,000 families in Winnipeg Ottawa Montreal and Halifax were chosen from children a Hospital databases to be part of the study. Half of the children had suffered injuries the other half had visited emergency departments for routine ailments such As asthma diarrhoea or ear infections. The Homes of the families were visited to Check for safety hazards. The main differences Between the groups involve baby walkers and smoke detectors. In nine per cent of the Homes where an injury occurred the family owned a baby Walker. The wheeled walkers which allow a baby to move around the room in an upright position have been banned for Sale in Canada since the Early 1980s because they can topple Down stairs and result in serious head injuries. The walkers Are often still sold at Flea markets or passed Down from family or friends said Leblanc. Five per cent of the other Homes surveyed owned baby walkers. Thirty three per cent of Homes where an injury occurred did no to have smoke detectors on each level compared to 25 per cent of the control Homes. In addition a Quarter of All Homes surveyed had smoke detectors that did no to work. Brunn Henry 90. Of Morden husband of Bertha Brunn. Al 90. Ferris Allan Roy 54, of Homewood.
