Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - July 13, 1997, Winnipeg, Manitoba Tell me a Story the stolen Cano solitary Man s selfish Streak leads to trouble once upon a time the people of the Northern coast of Australia were known As the bandicoot people. Often they stood upon the Shore staring longingly out to sea at a nearby Island. They had heard stories of the islands Beauty and of its plentiful fruit. They also had heard that thousands of Kangaroo ran wild there. The people dreamed and talked about the Island but they could never travel there for they had no Way of crossing the water. Only one Canoe existed in the whole country. A Man named Lamina owned the Canoe but Lamina let no one use his precious boat. Lamina was a solitary Man who feared others might harm his treasure. His Solitude led him to feel mistrust toward everyone. Lamina did not understand other people. He knew Only that his Canoe was a gift and he feared always that he might one Day lose it. Complained the bandicoot people despised Lamina for his selfishness. They stood on Shore and complained among themselves about the Man few of them knew. A How i wish i could see the Island a one Man said. A they say the fruit Are As big As the Sun and rabbits and Kangaroo crowd the Fields a Fulamina is a cruel Man Quot another said. A selfish that a what he is a others agreed. On and on they grumbled. One Young Man named bang uruk was determined to see the Island. The More he stared at it the More he knew he must find a Way there. Bang uruk refused to join the others in their complaining about Lamina for he did not know him. A a there a no sense in complaining a bang uruk told the others and walked away to be alone. He sat Down to think about How he might become a Laminar a Friend. After a while bang uruk knew exactly what to do. A everyone deserves kindness a bang uruk thought a and kindness is rewarded with with this in mind bang uruk went to see Lamina. From that Day on whenever Lamina needed any sort of assistance bang uruk was at his Side to help. If a Laminar a nets were torn bang uruk mended them. When Lamina was tired bang uruk did his chores for him. Bang uruk was generous. One Day he speared a Kangaroo and took the animal to Lamina offering him the largest portion of the meat. When the evenings were Cool bang uruk collected extra Wood for a Laminar a fire. After Many months Lamina began to feel affection for bang uruk. A Flicker of gratitude grew to a flame of Trust and Friendship. One Day Lamina awoke thinking of the Beautiful Island. He began to dream of practising his Favourite sports with a Friend at his Side. A i have just one Friend a Lamina said to himself. When bang uruk appeared that morning Lamina said a i am going out in my Canoe to the Island to Hunt turtles. Would you like to join me a bang uruk was overjoyed. The two men climbed into the Canoe and pad died out to sea. Before Long bang uruk caught a Large Turtle and with a Laminar a help he paddled quickly Back to Shore. Bang uruk pulled the Canoe upon the Shore placed the Large Turtle upon his Strong shoulders and climbed to the Ridge of the Sand Hill to build a fire. Out of sight of the sea and the Canoe bang uruk began to build a fire and Lamina smiled As he watched him. Both men looked Forward to sharing their catch and Lamina thought about How Lucky he was to have found a Friend. Soon ban Gurukk a fire was blazing and when the other bandicoot men saw the smoke rising they sneaked along the Beach toward the Canoe. Looking right and left they saw no one was watching. They launched the Canoe and paddled quickly out to sea heading toward the Island. Lamina had fallen asleep and was dreaming soothed by the delicious smell of Turtle meat. But suddenly the voices echoing across the Calm sea woke him. He stood up and peered Over the Sand Hill and to his dismay he saw the bandicoot men paddling his Canoe far away. He quickly Rose and rushed to the Beach. A return my Canoe a he cried wading into the water. A come Back you be stolen my Canoe a he waded in deeper and deeper. When he realized the men would not return he was distraught. He knew he had been outwitted and blamed the Man he thought had been his Friend. A i do not belong among men a he said tears falling from his eyes. He turned himself into a starfish and floated to the Bottom of the sea. Lamina starfish Man has lived at the Bottom of the sea Ever since. He Waves his arms about and drifts through the water hoping to recapture his stolen Canoe. As for bang uruk he too searches the sea but he is searching for his sad Friend starfish Man. A Story from Australia adapted by Amy Friedman and illustrated by Angela Farley. pig heart proves informative today we have two topics. First we hear from Nancy Campbells Grade 5 class at Elwick Community school. Before the summer break they were studying the circulatory system. In this connection they had a Chance to dissect pig hearts with the help of or. Donna Young biology professor at the University of Winnipeg. The students share with us some of their thoughts on this experience. Also earlier this year the Grade 5, room 16, class at Ramah hebrew school toured the free press building. They give us some of their impressions. Before and after the heart dissection before the heart dissection we put on lab Coats and put pens in our pockets. We All thought it would be Gross but surprisingly when we were dissecting it was pretty Cool. Or. Young was helping and teaching us throughout the dissection of the heart. This heart was As big As a fist and it was a pigs heart. Or. Young is a woman with science experience. We All thank or. Young for volunteering her time and expertise. A Sheena Poschner Angela Wojtyla Ferro Bonham Jack Pagtalunan a a on May 27th, or. Young came to our school to help us dissect pig hearts. Or. And mrs. Melnyk donated the hearts. First or. Young reviewed the parts of the human heart with us. Then the hearts were passed out and we started dissecting them. We found out that the thickest Wall is in the left ventricle. We were excited when we saw the heart Cut open. We really appreciated working with a real scientist. We Felt like scientists too we Hope to do More lab work with other professors. A Shaun Desmond Andrew Franco and april Leclair a Vav on May 27th, we dissected a pigs heart so that we could learn and understand about the different parts of the heart. We have done it without or. Young a biology professor from the University of Winnipeg. We really Are grateful that or. Young lab Coats set a scientific mood for the Grade 5 class at Elwick Community school. Volunteered her time before we started we were excited and some of us Felt sick. After we finished the dissection we Felt like real scientists we had to Cut the heart in a pattern with scissors and tweezers. We Learned a lot thanks to or. Young. A Jennifer Meixner Lambert Sebastian and Anthony Rychuk a v v our experience with or. Young on May 27, our class looked at dissected pigs hearts. We saw the left atrium four Chambers the right ventricle the Aorta and the valves. Or. Young explained to us How to look for different compartments. The tools we used were scissors and tweezers. We All enjoyed having or. Young work with us. We were scientists on May 27. A Natasha constant Blaine Coutu Chris Hoffman and Ashley Marsden a v v the dissection experience on tuesday the 27th, we dissected a pigs heart. Or. Young taught us How to Cut the heart the right Way. First we got a pair of tweezers and a pair of scissors while waiting for the heart. We dissected it and the heart Wasny to so Gross after All All kids should get to dissect a heart when they re As Young As us. A Jordan Acuna Jordana Koutecky and Jayson Palisoc a a a and now the free press experience. A tour guide gave us a tour of the building. We saw the first edition of the Winnipeg free press from when it was actually known As the Manitoba free press. This newspaper is from 1872, was about seven pages in All and every space was filled. If you wanted to find something you would have to read from cover to cover to find it. The name of the newspaper changed in 1931. The first newspaper must be very valuable. The Winnipeg free press has been around for 125 years and has been in its new location for six years. A Ivy Bricker a Vav the tour of the Winnipeg free press was very exciting for Grade 5s. The room that was enjoyed the most was the room where the papers were on a conveyor Belt and carried All around the room. It was exciting to see How much the paper goes through before it comes to you. It was interesting to see where the Cata logs Are stored and to find out How Many go out into Winnipeg. The Cata logs were All wrapped up in a huge Roll. Finally meeting Gordon Sinclair was the most memorable part of our visit. A Macey Weiss a a v the new free press building is six years old and the Arch in the lobby is from the old building. In the Neon room they make negatives for the paper and they also make Black plates which Are negatives of the paper on sheets of Metal. In the press room there Are three machines and each of them print out lots of paper. There Are three floors in the building. The floors and Walls Are floating so if they need to expand a room it can easily be done. It is a very big building holding a lot of information. A Benjamin tick own a a our tour guide was named Cheryl. We met a reporter named Gordon Sinclair who told us Many things about reporting. He writes about life. We went on a tour through the building and visited rooms such As the Library. Parts of the newspaper Are printed a Day before the newspaper comes out so they Are very organized. This was a wonderful learning experience. A Lindsay Nelko a v v an interesting room at the free press was the Library. The newspaper has its own Library but i had always thought they went to Public libraries to do research. In the Library they have a photocopy of the first edition of the Winnipeg free press although then it was called the Manitoba free press. They also have a research Section for movies. The movie producers Send information to the Winnipeg free press including photos of the movie. I found the Library to be the most interesting room. I Felt very informed after the tour.
