A Man who dumped one wife and was dumped by a second who lets circumstances direct him. What distinguishes him from any other hapless Bloke a or woman a stumbling through his unexamined existence the answer of course is in the humanity of Shields vision and the music of her language. Here is Larry in mourning a beneath his clothes is Larry sold body the body he was born with the value added body that a housed him for 44 years his thickening Walls of flesh his thumping conduits of blood and electricity. He a keeping himself alive in there his skin his Skull his dressed up face with precisely Woven shadows a doing what everyone tells him to do which is to take care of himself endlessly pardoning himself As he stands there at the Edge of his consciousness letting himself off with echoes and explanations a we had some Good years together not everyone can say that a and hanging on to the threaded filaments he a collected along the Way which will either Bury him alive or give him a Chance to catch his if one were to treat this novel As an exercise in psych ing out the other sex if we were to judge it As the daring feat of a woman a writing a Many a life a we would be mistaken. What Shields has done for her readers is to demystify the Man to discount the Penis its historical record its less than winning ways and to look at this a dressed up face a not As everyman but As an person. Which takes me to the end of the Book. I suppose it could very Well be that the biggest difference Between a Man and a woman of 47 is that the Man of that age is holding his very first dinner party whereas most woman by then would have hosted hundreds. Nevertheless i found the final scene mildly disappointing As entertaining As the dialogue is i wanted a closer focus on our boy Larry As he comes full Circle in life an inevitability that has been admirably put into place by the author. While on his honeymoon Larry visits the famous Garden Maze at Hampton court in England. It touches something profound in him a love was not protected. It sat out in the open like anything and he soon becomes a maker of mazes using his horticultural skills to build a career As a the Man who leads people but then we come to realize that Shields Book is in itself a Maze its 15 chapters mirroring the classic 15 turns that it takes to go in and out of the Maze at Hampton court. And the books first chapter a breathless Epiphany where a borrowed Tweed jacket leads Larry into a sense of what his life could be is called a fifteen minutes in the life of Larry we also learn that at the heart of every Maze is a a goal. The prize the final destination what the puzzling branching path is All in this Case the a a goal is the title sequence Larry a party a stunning sequence where Shields uses her considerable playwriting skills to let us follow an entire dinner party through Little More than the dialogue of the participants. And at the end a a prize. To Reward the patience of those who have picked their Way through the mazes path and arrived at the chosen place a conclusion which is surprising and serendipitous at the same time. Larry a party is not an exercise in millennial despair or merely one More visit to the Well of modern male angst. It is lit by Shields unique sensibility and warmed by her profound humanism. It is the Story of a a grown Man who stumbled fell into error got lost made a fool of himself but was willing at least to be rescued. Something Good was bound to come of and it has.
