Province to Cap abandoned Wells by Melanie Verhaeghe staff reporter the province will begin capping abandoned Wells in the flood zone this week to prevent another possibility of contaminated ground water. During the flood the major source of ground water contamination came from abandoned Wells on Peoples property. The Wells which Are still open allowed red River water Down to the aquifer which caused the source of ground water to become riddled with a Coli and Choli form bacteria rendering the water undrinkable. Tests last week showed that most of the Wells Are free of bacteria and the water is now drinkable. A a we be got it beat its just taking some time a said Rick Lemoine a Hydro geologist with the provincial department of environment. Out of 150 contaminated Wells in Grande Pointe Only two still have some problems and out of too contaminated Wells in St. Adolphe two people still can to drink their water. A the water is terribly coloured after it Rains a said John Wiens who had to pour bleach Down his Well for months after the flood to get clean water. Wiensz water still Isnit Safe to drink and he a not sure his family will Ever use it again. A one week the test comes Back of and the next week its the province spent Many hours this summer and fall trying to identify the location of abandoned Wells in the flood zone. So far officials have found 14 in Grande Pointe 18 in St. Adolphe and they expect to find another 15 in St. Germaine. The Prairie farm rehabilitation association helped the province locate the Wells. A one very interesting thing very Seldom did landowners know about abandoned Wells on their own property a said John Oosterveen groundwater specialist with the Prairie farm rehabilitation association. At a Cost of $300 per Well the province will close off the Wells with Cement. Each Well takes at least one hour to fill with two to three cubic metres of Concrete. Lemoine said the flood is proof that the provinces estimated 10,000 abandoned Wells need to be capped. A the flood showed what happened when you done to close the Wells off a Lemoine said. A it does no to have to be a flood. It could be a person walking around with something and they Chuck it Down an abandoned Well and it gets contaminated. Its a Nice Little disposal under the ground water and water Well act landowners Are responsible for capping abandoned Wells. But if they done to there is no Fine or penalty. Provincial officials Are revisiting the act to see if any changes should be made to give the act More Teeth. Lemoine said they Are also considering a financial incentive to get property owners to close Down Wells they no longer use.
