But what if you could pose a question to the search engine in Plain English in the same Way that you might pose a question to the research librarian at your local Library and what if the search engine could understand the question and respond to it precisely just As an All knowing librarian would be Able to reach for the right Book on the reference shelf Kathleen Dahlgren a computational linguist and her colleague Edward Stabler contend they have built exactly such a search engine which they recently patented. The system dubbed Inqui zit is based on natural language searching which Means that it retrieves and stores information in much the Way that people talk. The system is built in part on a set of principles Dahlgren Laid out in her 1988 Book naive semantics for natural language understanding. We Model the Way people interpret the meanings of a word through context Dahlgren said. We search on meaning by using grammar and Structure and semantics. It s a private sector decision and that i la leave to them and their employees Downey said last night. It s not my place to get into the discussion Between a company and its Downey noted that because Maple Leaf s soon to be built Brandon operation will create 2,200 jobs there will be a net gain in employment by the company in Manitoba. But that was cold Comfort to the Winnipeg workers. It s blackmail yelled one Union member As a few president Bernie Christophe talked to the Media. Scott Miller has worked at Maple Leaf for More than 13 years. He said that under the new contract effective april 1,1999, his pay will plummet from $17.49 an hour to $9.25 an hour. I be got a mortgage i be got two kids. How can i afford to stay for that kind of Money he wondered. Miller like Many other Maple Leaf workers with families said he could find work elsewhere at $10 to $12 an hour. He said he d have to take the company s Severance pay of $1,000 per year of service. But Miller said it was t fair that workers with fewer than five years service and As Little As two months service will receive $5,000 if they Are Laid off or opt to leave. He said the company had hired More than 200 workers recently. Anger and concern were on All workers faces As they filed out of be rendezvous. Older workers walked quickly to their cars or said there was Little Choice. It s heartbreaking really said one Veteran employee who did t give his name. I think they did the Best they but younger workers were quite vocal in their opposition to the new contract and the Union. While the vote was being tallied shouts of Boycott Maple Leaf products and buy Schneider a were heard. One group piled up the contracts in the Middle of the Road and set them on fire. Though the meeting was closed to the news Media Yelling could be heard through the open doors of be rendezvous. Many shouted there was no Choice while others hurled profanities at Christophe. If anyone in this room does t think owner Michael Mccain is going to shut Down this Plant they re living in a fantasy world one member said. Indeed Maple Leaf has provided ample evidence across the country that it Means business. In the past year the company has had strikes in Edmonton Burlington Hamilton and North Battleford. Before those negotiations Maple Leaf announced it wanted wages. After the strikes Maple Leaf lowered the wages at three plants and closed the Fishers struggle like banners continued from a1 like struggling Farmers after the Federal government Cut Grain transportation subsidies and railway rationalization kicked in Northern Fishers say the system is bankrupting them. According to Stoffer provincial Federal and territorial subsidies of about half a million dollars have dropped to approximately $250,000. The people in Gimli seem to be doing very Well. They be got new boats and new houses. The people up North Are at a hearing in the Northern Manitoba Community of South Indian Lake staffer said the group heard about a study which found the town s Revenue from fishing would climb by almost $2 million if they could set up a processing Plant nearby and Market their own catch. Fishers who came out to the hearings told the committee they fear a poor Quality product being sold by the Femc will result in a loss of High value markets for Prairie fishermen. The committee also heard How the Cost of running the Board initially set at four Wallace Dies at 79 associated press Montgomery Ala. Former governor George c. Aside from Fishers for stores such As Safeway superstore and Winnipeg s Gimli fish Market which often buys fish to supplement its own catch the Femc is the Only game in town. Owner Karen Olson said consistently poor Quality product has forced her to Start buying Whitefish and Mullet from an aboriginal supplier in Ontario. We be been screwed. The Union let us Down said Jim Zimmer. 90-year-old Edmonton operation. Christophe was philosophical after the vote.
