Next door Blaze clears High rises abandoned Auto repair garage Burns by Kevin Rollason staff reporter two connected 11-Storey downtown apartment buildings had to be evacuated last night when a fire erupted in a neighbouring abandoned Auto repair garage. Deputy fire chief Tom Derhak said hundreds of residents of 355 and 357 Kennedy St., managed by the Manitoba housing authority were evacuated because of the Clouds of smoke wafting from the Blaze at 405 Ellice ave. People were curious and were watching from their balconies but we were Able to totally evacuate the building Derhak said. The air system brings in air from outside so you could get smoke inhalation if you stayed Derhak said the Blaze was Well involved when firefighters arrived aided by Oil grease and other flammable liquids still in the building. We believe the fire was burning for a while and finally broke through Derhak said As firefighters poured water through the doors and roof of the vacant garage formerly Complete Auto service. It s the owner s responsibility to make sure the building is Safe even if people Are not occupying it he said. The fire which was reported at about 6 30 ., caused an estimated $300,000 damage to the garage. There were no injuries and the cause is under investigation. Apartment resident Cathy Moore a Mother of four said she knew it was Only a matter of time before the vacant garage caught fire. Another resident Thelma Jonas son said she first Learned about the fire while watching the news on television. They said there was a fire and i said to myself get downstairs " the ninth floor resident said. Then the alarms were going off and they were telling everybody to get out. It was Webb place resident Doug Mcdonald watched from the nearby High Rise apartment As the Blaze ate through the roof of the garage. There were flames coming out of the roof and at that time i Don t think the firefighters on the ground knew that Mcdonald said. You could see the roof caving in and finally it collapsed. It was a very impressive Derhak said 40 firefighters with six pumper trucks two Aerial ladders and three Rescue vehicles battled the Blaze. Two Winnipeg transit buses were summoned for evacuated residents. Manitoba judges to get big raises even with 16 per cent hike in pay they re still ranked no. 8 in Canada by David Kuxhaus legislature reporter finance minister Eric Ste Fanson has agreed to give Manitoba s provincial court judges the lowest paid in the country a 16 per cent salary increase. The hike which still needs to be approved by the legislature would see salaries jump to $112,000 from $96,172, effective april 1,1998. The chief judge would get an additional $10,000 a year and associate chief judges an extra $3,000. Improve benefits in addition to the pay hike the judges would also receive an improved benefits package. Recommendations to raise the pay for provincial court judges were made earlier this summer by an Independent judicial compensation committee. The committee s proposals would add about $540,000 to the roughly $3.5 million already budgeted in salaries and benefits for the Manitoba s 36 judges. Stefanson noted the salary increase will place judges in eighth position among the provinces. We think that s reasonable and acceptable said Stefanson. Other recommendations supported by the government include a two dental exams per year. Other provincial government employees just get one. A elimination of the life insurance salary Cap of $70,000. A reimbursement for expenses incurred in the carrying out of their duties such As the Cost of clothing and dry cleaning of clothing unique to judges. A allowances for personal computers and other Job related tools. A sick leave limited to a maximum of 208 Days. A Long term disability benefits continued to age 65. The government refused to provide the judges with free parking which was recommended by the committee. Lawyer Robb tonn who represents the judges said it would be premature to comment on the government s position. We re just in the Middle of the process he said. Well have to wait and see the final a legislative standing committee reviewing the compensation proposals is expected to Render a final decision within the next few months. Tonn said he is disappointed that the government is not accepting All of the recommendations. I think it s important to note that the compensations committee had recommended that everything should be considered As a package and not Deal with piecemeal because they had traded off already some things against other things he said. Mandatory retirement meanwhile the government is also looking at mandatory retirement for judges which Stefanson said is designed to prevent judges from collecting both a pension and a salary at the same time. After 15 years of service judges who turn 65 Are eligible for a pension of $29,600, said a government spokesman. He said currently three judges on the provincial Bench Are double dipping. Every other province has a mandatory retirement age for judges said Stefanson. It ranges from 65 to 75. Kaufmann to hit Back at Murray by David o Brien City Hall reporter t he gloves Are off.
