Bill Paton a member of the technical advisory committee helping design the Plant s Wastewater treatment system has sent Manitoba environment 23 pages of critical comments on the plan. Final costs for the treatment Plant to be built and operated by the City of Brandon have yet to be determined though the City originally committed $5 million and the province $2.5 million. The facility May have to expand if it proves inadequate or if Maple Leaf doubles its workforce in about three years but no one will say who would pay for the expansion. We will address that when we know it s necessary Maple Leaf s vice president of engineering Peter Smith said in an interview. The Public has until tomorrow to respond to the Wastewater treatment plan but Paton said the government should put off issuing a licence until inconsistencies Are sorted out. However an environmental consultant working for Maple Leaf said the Plant s opening could be delayed if a Lagoon is not dug before the ground freezes. Smith said it s in the company s economic interest to conserve water and remove every scrap of waste possible. Maple Leaf will co operate with the City to make sure any problems with the treatment Plant get fixed he said including temporarily shutting the hog Plant if necessary. When you look at the waste. He also stressed that water flowing out of the treatment Plant will account for less than one per cent of the River s flow.
