But Diane a life was destined to be tragic. Neon warning lights should have been flashing from the Day the girl was born. A danger Quot they should have read. A sorrow Diane Louise Grisdale was born feb. 16,1980, at St. Boniface general Hospital the daughter of Erika Grisdale and a Man Erika wont name. Erika 20, was alone for the birth a Quick and painless delivery. Diane was the second of Erika a White Blond Beautiful daughters. Tammy was two and Jennifer would follow Diane a year later. The girls became the focus of Erika a life. Just 38 today Erika has already buried a daughter a son who died in infancy and a grandson. A i believed my kids Are my future a Erika said sitting and smoking in the living room of Diane a tiny rental House. A i have values. I taught my girls to work hard for what they wanted to stand up for the paint on the House is peeling the porch sagging wearily. Diane is living on welfare and this was the Best place that could be found. She moved in a hurry after Randy a death. Hers is the sort of House where poor people live when they need a Quick new address. Diane a oversized floor Model furniture takes up so much room that you can to Cross the room without bumping into something. The air is thick with the smoke filled exhalations of Mother and daughter. As their Story painfully spills out they Light one cigarette after another. The Grisdale have missed the cult of self examination their words drop like stones. The reasons for much of their pain remain a mystery to these women. A i done to understand Why Tammy died a Erika says stroking her damaged permed hair. A no one Ever died in our family. I had to keep going. Diane knows she has to keep you could criticize Erika Grisdale for a lot of things but no one can say she did no to try to be a Good Mother. She was hampered by poverty youth and Lack of a partner. She still did More than anyone could have expected. Sixteen years later on May 12, 1996, Diane Grisdale would be following her mothers example giving birth to her first son Randy at St. Boniface Hospital. Her inability to alter her destiny seemed set before her birth. Hers was the sequel to Erika Grisdale a Story. Tammy Diane and Jennifer have the same father a fact that Erika wants stressed. Erika firmly declares she has standards a a decent woman does no to have serial fathers for her children. She just does no to believe in marriage. There Are few men in the stories of the Grisdale women. When they appear it is fleeting and often painful. Bill Rudnicki 48, was one of the Good ones. The West Kildonan native lived common Law with Erika a sister Karen for almost to years. During that time he watched Diane and her Sisters grow from babies to Young teens. Erika he says did everything for her kids. A a she a always take care of the children a says Rudnicki. A a she a work like a dog. I remember sometimes when Erika had three jobs. She a a he pauses and adds a a she a had some terrible relationships despite their circumstances the Grisdale had As Normal a life As possible says Rudnicki. A i had a Pool in the Yard for the kids and they Dall come Over. Sometimes wed have birthday parties for them Here. We had Christmas together a few times. Diane was always Happy. There were always presents. Even if there Wasny to any Money Erika found a Rudnicki says the girls were obviously cared for. A it was a Little like leave it to Beaver sometimes a he laughs. A the kids were clean they were Well dressed and looked after. They weren to in any More or any less trouble than anyone else. I have had them in my House if they were. A they had a Good he pauses. A maybe they still Carol Robert was a Friend of Erika a when the girls were Small and when they hit adolescence was hired to babysit while Erika worked nights As a hostess and Cook at papa Georges restaurant. She says most people have no idea what its like to be a single Parent walking the line Between getting by and giving up. A the hardest part is Money a says Robert herself a single Mother whose son was struck by a car and killed in october. A surviving is very hard. Every Day is a struggle. can to give your kids the things you want. feel guilty. feel angry. just feel so bad but you Haven to got the Money. A Erika was a Good mom. Shed always be bringing them places in pretty dresses a recalls Robert. A i have a lot of respect for Erika. She worked to get the Best for her kids. Its just the Way life took her that a what happened. Those girls were left on their own a Little too Erika says All three girls were Good kids that she did her Best by them. The school photos were purchased the visits to a mall Santa made the requested presents placed under the Christmas tree. Erika attended the Parent teacher interviews. The family lived in the North end when Diane was born moving to Elmwood and then East Kildonan. Diane and her Sisters attended Don Wood school lord Selkirk and finally Isaac Brock. Joining the k-9 school in Grade 5, she made an immediate impression. Held Back in Grade 2, she was a year older than the other students. She was la a startling Beauty with a winning smile and a Chip on her shoulder. A when she and her Sisters arrived at our school the younger sister had a slight speech impediment. Diane was fiercely protective of her a remembers Val Smyth then the Vic principal of Isaac Brock. A she was always mothering. She was always very Good with the younger kids very Terry Douglas was the school guidance counsellor at the time. As Tammy Grisdale a Home room teacher he was closest to the eldest sister. He and Diane got to know each other he says and he tells her Story with a sense of inevitability. A she was a needy Little girl a Douglas says of Diane. A she has problems but deep inside she is still a Little girl. She a no Angel but what kid is i was close to her when she was at school. I saw a lot of her when she was in the trouble says Douglas sprang from an outward toughness Diane Felt she needed to affect. A she Felt this is what she needed to be to survive for people to like her. If Only Diane could have been taken away from her friends and put in a Safe environment had someone say a you have to go to classes a you come in and go to bed maybe things would have been things did no to get any better. By the end of Grade 6, the two older Grisdale girls were spending time on the streets. The 12 and 13-year-old were with older teens and adults and says Douglas their innocence was quickly lost. A i knew that they were hanging around with the wrong people rougher people. She had a lot of responsibility on her and she was making some wrong decisions. It was being out on the Street that banished the Little Young teenagers Are often looking for someone who understands them says Douglas. A they talk to people on the Street and they think they re listening. What they re really listening for is Diane a school career ended in Grade 8. Douglas says she was expelled for kicking another girl in the face and breaking the child a nose in an alleged gang initiation. Another school was willing to take her but Diane had begun her inexorable descent. Diane says she left school on her own when she became pregnant with Randy. A school was found that assisted pregnant teens she says but she Wasny to interested. A i did no to get my Grade 12, of i dropped out to be a Good Mother of a Mother who was at Home with her Beauty and an Early introduction to sex As a bargaining Chip paid the Bills. A for a Young teen to try to make a living. done to know this. can to imagine this. Its not like i was being a Hooker and not being a Good Mother to my kids. Never in my life did i stand on a Street she did work in the clubs did Model lingerie did what a pretty 15-year-old with no Job skills and fewer resources does to survive and to keep the party going. A me and Vul we can Only handle being in the same room together for so Long a she says inhaling deeply on her Ever present cigarette. Randy was born in 1996 and named for a son born to Erika after Tammy a death. The first baby Randy died in infancy. Shortly after Andy was born Diane met Daniel younger the Man now accused of criminal negligence in Randy a death. Their relationship was a blueprint for sorrow from the Start. The pair married in a Quick ceremony at the Law courts building when Diane was 18. They were supposed to go on a River cruise to celebrate but those plans went sour.
