Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - December 6, 1998, Winnipeg, Manitoba
C4 Winnipeg free press sunday december 6,1998 Sun d a sports youngsters Shine in swimming spotlight by Chris Cariou sports reporters High school seconds after Stefanie Andruchuk won the 200-metre breaststroke at the Manta swim clubs Prairie Winter International meet yesterday she pointed at Manta coach Jamie Griffiths and grinned slyly. Yesterday morning before preliminary heats at the meet involving almost 500 swimmers from Ages eight to 20, Griffiths had promised his 12-year-old swimmer break the three minute Mark and head get a Brush Cut. Andruchuk blew away her opposition in the morning with a time of 2 59.20. By the time she was finished last night Griffiths was bearing a Brush Cut and the Westdale Junior High school student was brandishing a Gold medal after posting a time of 2 59.62 in the final. A i wanted to break three minutes in my 200-breaststroke, and i did a said Andruchuk who along with 12-year-old Manta teammate Oswald Lee were among the brightest local lights in the 18th annual Manta meet. A last year i was trying to break 3 10, and i did it. This year i was trying to break three minutes and i did that. My next goal is to get into the top 50 in the country a so i can get to go into swim Magazine a and to qualify for Junior she a Only been swimming for two years a the same As Lee who shaved about la seconds off his previous Best time in the 200-metre breaststroke to win the Gold. His easy Victory in the event for 12-year-Olds moved the Linden Christian school student into the top 25 in the country after not being a ranked at All. A it was pretty Good a the slight shy youngster said. A i like the breaststroke because its a it was his last Chance to really go out with a great swim a said Griffiths. Lee turns 13 soon. A to do it at a very High level of Competition like this is quite an achievement for him. He a probably id guess moved up maybe too spots in the rankings just and that the Manta coaches say is what this meet is All about. While Winnipeg a Kelly Stefanyshyn is shining at the meet that a to be expected from Canadas top Backstron Ker in the under-17 age category. This meet is for the Andruchuk and the Lees Young up and Comers who Are looking to break into the elite. A this meet is for the developing Talent the emerging Talent a Manta National group coach Tom Hainey said As swimmers from As far away As London ont., Superior wis., and Alberta converged on the pan am Pool for the mid season event that concludes today. A swimmers who Are at a very High level will Shine at this meet no question. This meet is designed to bring kids who Are just sub National level to the National level a the emerging level the new but meets like this can be a grind for teenagers and younger kids who Are seeking to Advance in a sport where a tenth of a second can mean the difference Between attaining a National Standard or going Home with nothing. A we had a kid who a just barely a Junior National qualifier a Hainey said. A then he comes to this meet and Boom he a almost a National qualifier. You see those jumps. But most kids have a slower More uniform progression. And others it seems take forever to come there a a lot at stake for these kids particularly the ones aged 13 and up. They train for two four hours a Day six Days a week. A this Isnit High school sports a Hainey says. Provincials Kaaa boys Gle Lawn Del.
