Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - September 24, 2000, Winnipeg, Manitoba Costly cerebral palsy therapy fruitless study by Helen Bramwell parents spend thousands treatments value in doubt Toronto a new evidence suggests hyperbaric oxygen treatment does not Lead to marked improvements in children with cerebral palsy. Many parents Are spending thousands of dollars on the treatments based on anecdotal reports that time spent in hyperbaric tanks helps diminish spasticity and increase functional ability. However Little research has been done to test the theory that delivering High Levels of oxygen to the brain a what the hyperbaric or High pressure treatment does a reactivates parts of the brain believed to have been damaged by Lack of oxygen in the womb or at birth. Quot the argument is you can tickle this damaged but still alive brain tissue into action Quot or. Peter Rosenbaum chief of staff at Toronto a Bloo View Macmillan Centre for children with disabilities told parents at a weekend conference. A a that a the argument. Does no to make a lot of sense to most of his suspicions Are fuelled by a new study by or. Jean Paul Collet of Montreal that pours cold water on claims that hyperbaric treatment has benefits for children with cerebral palsy. An overview of collets findings which have been submitted for publication in the British medical journal the lancet was presented to a group of parents attending yesterdays ses Sion of the american Academy for cerebral palsy and developmental Medicine. Collet director of clinical research at the lady Davis Institute of the jewish general Hospital studied 140 children with cerebral palsy across per cent oxygen half were Given too per cent oxygen treatments five times a week for half a Day per session during october 1999 and january of this year. Children in the control group were also placed in a hyperbaric tank but received regular air at a slightly elevated pressure a the equivalent to the air pressure in a plane. Significant a but equal a improve ments were observed in both groups. The researchers cannot be sure Why both groups improved and to the same degree but hypothesize it May be a result of what is known As Quot trial it has been Well documented that the very fact of being in a medical trial can produce improvements in a subject regardless of whether he or she receives the actual treatment or the Placebo. There is one thing the researchers know about such results however. Its a Basic tenant of medical research a we cannot prescribe the treatment hyperbaric oxygen because its not better than the Placebo Quot Collet said. But it May take More than collets study to convince parents like Cheryl Luymes of Barrie ont., whose three year old daughter Katherine has cerebral palsy. Luymes attended the session where collets findings were discussed. For her the important news was the fact that improvements were seen in All the children studied. Quot that just makes me think of. Well they All gained. So something came out of that a she insisted. And she has no plans to drop the treatment. Quot i know there Isnit hard evidence for anything. But i have to look at what the parents Are saying As Well. And a lot of parents Are saying they re seeing improvements a including herself she said.
