Power plants Mercury emissions Are greatest threat prof by Aldo Santin Mercury emissions from the stack at Manitoba hydrous Coal burning Plant in East Selkirk pose a greater health threat than other substances being monitored says a retired University of Manitoba chemistry professor. Hyman Gesser said that based on Hydro records More than 33 kilograms of Mercury were dispersed into the area around the Plant last year but noted no one is monitoring the Mercury emissions or How much of it is finding its Way into Peoples Homes. A i done to want to scare anyone but Mercury can be and should be monitored a Gesser said. Mercury poisoning is linked to neurological disorders. The environmental licence issued to Hydro for its East Selkirk Plant requires that stack emissions be monitored Only for Sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide. In the United states the environmental Protection Agency issued a report in 1998 that said Mercury emissions from Coal fired generating plants Are the most serious air pollutant concern. The Epa report said no technology exists that can effectively remove Mercury from Plant emissions. Larry Strachan director of environmental approvals for Manitoba conservation said monitoring Mercury was not required when the licence was issued in 1993 because no one was aware of its health threats. Strachan said Hydro will be required to test for the presence of Mercury in a single test in january and depending on what those tests show he could require regular monitoring for Mercury. Hydro has denied any link Between the operation of the East Selkirk Plant and the environmental changes reported by some residents who live about to Kilometres to the South near Birds Hill Park. Hydro says regular monitoring shows All emissions Are within or below recognized guidelines.
