Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - December 17, 2000, Winnipeg, Manitoba Three Little words we done to need at Christmas hoho whore just in time for Christmas an upscale Academy Road gift shop is Selling slut Bitch and Virgin soaps conveniently packaged for gift giving. Now this is the sort of present that would guarantee a Yule Brawl at my House but the owners of Mould say its just Good clean fun. A we re making Light of something Here a says Michael Gorenstein whose Mother Beverley founded the boutique. A a let a have some fun with these words. They have been used in a hurtful Way but we can take them Back and turn them but who would spend $12.95 on a bar of Bitch soap or $15.95 on the Virgin slut combination Box scads of people apparently and most of them women. Moule had to Fly in an emergency order of the soaps after its Holiday brochure hit mailboxes in Winnipeg and Vancouver. A women Are buying it for their friends Quot says Gorenstein. A a they la come in and just Start to howl. Its a Omigo this is perfect for Susan a we find men Are reluctant to buy and with Good cause although a Man recently dropped by the store bought a handful of Bitch soaps and Beverley Gorenstein shows Bitch and dirty girl soap and Virgin and slut lip Balm hot Sellers among Christmas shoppers at her Moule boutique. Joked about taking care of All the women on his list. Not everyone a laughing. An upset free press Reader called to complain about the soaps saying her stomach had Quot just heaved when she found her Moule flyer in the Mailbox. A a in a a teacher and the Mother of a seven year old a she said. A i can to believe they a sell this that they a think this was appropriate. And at Christmas what Are they thinking a Gorenstein says there were some concerns when the store first brought in the american line of soaps creams lip gloss and washcloths last year. A we wondered if it would be offensive to Young children. We certainly did no to want that will it be degrading to women i actually talked to a Mother and her 12-year-old in West Vancouver. She was there buying her daughter the total Bitch soap and the total Bitch Cleanser. She said that if people did no to think their kids were hearing these words at school and on television and in the movies they were just kidding while the world must tilt in a different direction on the West coast if mothers think Bitch soap is an appropriate gift for a child Gorenstein says there have been very few complaints. A really we Challenge you to come in and see the product. Take a look at the packaging at the sense of fun in this. Most people Arentt upset by still there Are those lingering taste questions. Sending out a Holiday Mailer that features just 13 items a three of them the Eye popping soaps a is a Quick Way to offend women the faithful and those who think a bar of soap should Only Cost 99 cents. Gorenstein says the Virgin slut combination was not meant to ruffle anyone who views Christmas As a religious Observance and not just As the Chance to toss gaily wrapped presents at friends and family. Marc Gallant i Winnipeg free press a when we sent out the Mailer it Wasny to intended As a Christmas piece a says Gorenstein although the brochure arrived at Winnipeg Homes in Early december was in Christmas colours and featured handmade ornaments. A it Wasny tour intention to have a correlation Between Christmas and the Mailer. Really. It be taken that Way especially the Virgin Here show in a taking it. I done to want to reclaim a Bitch Quot or a a slut and i done to want anyone reclaiming them on my behalf. I think if you buy these things for a kid you should have to take a parenting course. If you buy them for a Girlfriend you better be really sure she a going to laugh. During the process of collective bargaining with the assistance of a provincially appointed conciliation officer both negotiating committees arrived at a mutually developed agreement in committee on october 17, 2000, which was subsequently rejected by the Union membership. This agreement included a salary increases of 7.5 Over three years ending december 31, 2002, a increased vacation benefits a increased paid leave provisions a wording on contracting out which a guaranteed Job Security to existing employees a continued to provide existing employees the Opportunity of first Choice of any vacancies that May occur through attrition a provided the division the Opportunity to determine the feasibility of alternative services for those positions left vacant by current employees a the Board also agreed to a protocol for Field trip assignments that w As proposed by the employees. We believe this agreement fairly addressed the concerns and needs of both parties. In View of the agreement in committee reached Between the parties we find it difficult to understand Why the employees have chosen to strike. I he Board of trustees has clearly stressed from the outset of negotiations and continues to stress that we do riot have a plan to contract out the divisions transportation system. It is regrettable the contract negotiations Between the River East school division and the Canadian Union of Public employees has resulted in a strike situation. We want you to know that the River East school division continues to work co operatively with the conciliation officer appointed to assist the parties in settling this dispute. I he Board of trustees thanks the Public for your support and understanding during these frustrating times. Brian Olynik Wayne Ritcher Deloraine woman hiring own midwife to assist Home birth regional health authority does t have one by Helen falling the province is refusing to cover midwives fees for some Rural women a even though midwifery is now a medically insured service. Leanne Campbell has been lobbying health minister Dave Chomiak for months to develop an interim plan while the new service is rolled out across the province a but time is running out before her second child is born in february. A i want Chomiak to pay for my birth a she said. The Deloraine woman has resigned herself to finding her own midwife to assist with a Home birth because the South Westman regional health authority has made no move to hire its own. She is willing to travel but the midwife hired by the Brandon regional health authority attends Only Hospital births and midwives working for the Winnipeg regional health authority do not accept new clients from outside the City. Other medically insured services Are not denied to certain Manitoban because of where they live but Manitoba health has left it up to regional health authorities to implement midwifery at their own Pace. If Campbell is Lucky a registered midwife Between jobs will be available in february to help her for about $500. She said her Only other option is to Cross the Border and pay about $1,500 us to an american midwife along with extra fees to Register her baby As a Canadian citizen. Bringing the child Back Home could be Touchy since Campbell would have to prove to immigration authorities that the Newborn is actually hers. She knows other Rural women in the same situation and feels Chomiak has a responsibility to reimburse them for their expenses. But Chomiak said Friday the province will Only fund midwives employed by health authorities. Only a few regional health authorities have hired midwives since the profession was recognized by the province this summer. The South Westman regional health authority is moving slowly in part because of a reluctance to get involved with Home births. A we do not feel it is a Safe alternative in South Westman Quot ceo Penny Sorensen said although the College of midwives which is supposed to set the standards for the new profession disagrees. Chomiak said women Are not being denied Access to birthing services since they can still give birth in hospitals with physicians attending. Guaranteeing full Access from the Start would have meant delaying the implementation of midwifery he said. A now a lot of people have Access to this service. Soon More will have Sorensen said the South Westman Rha will meet with Campbell this week to see if there is some Way to meet her needs. A a we re hoping there la eventually be an All weather connection to the Richardson a obviously the building would have to be renovated first a said u of w Vic president of finance and administration Graham Lane. U of w acquired the Citadel building two years ago and it is quietly looking to expand and grow throughout the downtown. Murray said 389 main is already eligible for heritage tax credits and he believes City Council can be persuaded to offer tax credits and Grants for u of w expansion downtown. That could include the West Side of Spence Street opposite u of a touted until recently As a possible site for the downtown red River Campus now planned for Princess Street. But said Murray head prefer that u of w move to the East towards the City Centre rather than the West. Heritage tax credit Murray confirmed he a told Rooke that the City would Likely extend a heritage tax credit for desperately needed $14-million renovations of the Century old Wesley Hall once funding is in place. That would require moving the definition of downtown a Block to the West. A Ruof w is on the Periphery of downtown. Its a Block out of the tax credit zone a Murray said. A i have to convince Council.
