Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - March 18, 2001, Winnipeg, Manitoba San Ivan mama Zinc focus Winniw Macii 2001 narrow strip a Welcome sight country Road does take me Home by Ted Stone John Denver wrote a song called take me Home country i think of that song sometimes after i turn off the Highway and Start driving Down the Little Road that leads to my the Road is but its not gravel because anyone put it there to make a the gravel just happened to be left Over from the old shorelines of ancient Lake my wife and i bought the farm at the end of this Road four years ago and after we Tell people How to get they turn off the Highway near our drive about Halfway Down the and then turn around and go Back to the Highway con Vinced they must have taken a wrong turn there sure that the Lane they were pinched Between Poplar Trees and barbed wire could not possibly Lead to a place where anyone to i the Road is Little More than a Lane Way into the barely kept up enough to even be considered a i rarely drive Down that without seeing some sort of wildlife Ive seen a Bear on the Road a couple of and an Eagle every now and slice of life once i saw what i believe was a theres wildlife All around the twice weve seen or maybe its the same Cougar and weve just seen it Over my daughter saw it once while looking out our living room there Are Beaver in the porcupines in the Pine theres been a great Grey owl around and we hear coyotes As regularly As City people hear three years a Timber Wolf killed a calf just inside the in not Happy about the but i like living in a place where Timber wolves still pose a there Are even places in the pastures where tall grass Prairie grasses continue to since much of the land there has never been broken by a but theres something about the Road itself that especially appeals to my perhaps its because the Road brings me Home after Ive been or its because the con Trast Between the Road and the High Way is so in away from Home for several Days every week because of my work and when i turn off the Highway on to that it seems like in already Home there Are other houses on the but there All close to the once i go Down the Hill and around the first curve there Are no others until i get to our nearly two Miles at the end of the theres really nothing about the Road that should make it stand out in my imagination the Way it it follows a but the Creek is Small and mostly hidden in the Trees so its not particularly there Are a couple of curves where the Road turns to avoid the meandering of the a couple of places where you go up or Down the to or from the Creek Val but mostly its a straight unremarkable As it rises gradually Over each succeeding gravel the Road starts in what the people who live nearby Call the on the Eastern Edge of the red River but it rises steadily As it moves out of the Over the former shorelines of Lake on the end of the Road where you turn off the Grain Fields cover the land for As far As you can but the Road itself stretches through pasture Rocky and tree covered so you cant see far unless youre looking straight East or up and Down the earlier roads have also Cut through this somewhere along these old ridges the Crow or Woods used to run Between fort Garry and the Road Home May be but its Ken Gicu Otti Winnipeg free press archives my Creek was known then As the Middle Halfway Between the rat and the some time a new Trail is going to be going through the Tran Canada but for this is my even though i dont own it with a in the cattle and horses Are inside the fences As i drive choke Cherry and wild Rose Bushes line the Edge of the in the the horses and cattle Are almost everything along the Road is covered by the a Neighbour uses the Road then to exercise his dog team and i sometimes see him and his dogs mushing Down the Trail on my Way the Snow will be melting and Spring will put a new face on the with nesting boxes on some of the will a couple of the bad spots in the Road will turn to no matter what season it the Road will still take me Filp the free press letters from they must include the authors address and Telephone number letters May be letters to the 1355 Mountain r2x fax email Airport Art a viewable on a recent i had occasion to spend several hours in Winnipeg inter National where i discovered to my pleasure the wonderful Wall Sculp Ture by Eli Bornstein installed at one end of the great it is not possible to actually see the piece from any one As it is obscured by a sus Pended a and a Row of coca cola i can Only imagine what a wonderfully Light and airy space the Airport must have been when it born steins Serene and elegant work of Art would have contributed to that the Airport is a sad Hodgepodge of commercialization and advertise the work by John at the other end of the is treated equally Bornstein is a recognized Mas Winnipeg Doest appreciate what a treasure it Andrew Hubbertz Saskatoon spell out what free press Means we All know that the Winnipeg free press is it costs or More a year to depending on the Mode of subscript but none of your pre supposes that their buying the paper implies it is bought in the pejorative they have that is to that the free though sold to is still a free press in not being in the pocket of anyone As the expressive old saying your editorial in last fridays Issue on the imbroglio puts that presumption in David in the course of his Southam Post pronouncements reprinted on the same at one Point remarks that a free press is essential to democracy provided it acts everything Here depends on what is meant by acts responsibly most acts responsibly toward whom but Aspers so far As it is contrast with your own declaration in your editorial that own ers of newspapers have every right to impose their opinions and their views of the news on the papers they we do know that owners in fact exer Cise this influence Over their newspapers not least because their Basic 4 i clientele Are advertisers from whom the bulk of their profits what immediately strikes one about your own dictum is your assertion that own ers have a right to impose their views on editorials and news i had always thought that the print at least the press in the literal which once included Dafoe of free press Fame always rep resented journalism As a necessary adjunct of democracy precisely because its loyalty was first and always to the and secondly to the and their right to know the without which they could not Hope to make wisely those decisions As citizens from which emerge year to year the just Laws and social practices that make democracy the Only justifiable form of whatever the merits and demerits of Aspers even the Little Guy from Shawinigan like some Day or and the present controversy will fade but the Issue raised by your comments against Asper is a much More permanent and important matter than the right honourable jeans Zeal on behalf of his at the conclusion of your you Call on the Asper family to spell out what they believe about an owners role in on your have done but it is surely now reasonable for your readers to Call on you to explain How your Conception of an owners role is compatible with a and Rodger Beehler Winnipeg powerhouse failure predictable the Story about the powerhouse Street kids Centre March 11 was informative not Leah Hendry did a Good Job getting accurate information from the powerhouse Carol in the business improvement zone lobbied hard to implement the anti Squeegee kid it and As a result the homeless most of whom Are transient and from abusive were turned into then a few Funky social workers were Given the task of hiding the kids from the and were paid big Bucks Phil Hossack Winnipeg free press archives Carol executive director of inside a heated bus shelter with Street for it is Barton and the 11 employees make Money while these kids sleep in bus i guess is Barton and the powerhouse didst do their Job Well enough the business owners complained again and now dont even want the the original building was taken from them and now their storefront is being taken away what has happened is that this red her which was designed to distract attention from a serious problem homeless youth is doing exactly what i said it would do when i ran in the civic election and raised the Issue its doing nothing for the its even failed in the strategic task the establishment wanted it to do sweeping them under the Rod Graham Winnipeg death blown out of proportion i am compelled to write after Reading in your paper numerous times that Kris Howard was three times the Legal limit at must Point out that this is not a drinking and driving Issue and As such he was not three times the Legal there is no Legal limit for Howard did nothing Ille Gal As there Are no reports that i am aware of that he drove a his death is an unfortunate Accident that alcohol played a part but it is being blown Way out of the Industry has responded with measures aimed at hopefully preventing this from happening to someone please let Howard rest in peace and Bob Stevens president Manitoba restaurant association Winnipeg Shilo a Good place for services personnel with All the recent Media coverage of concerns of Quality of life issues related to the future of 2ppcli in it amazes me that there has been no attempt to speak with those people who presently reside at Canadian forces base i have lived on numerous military both in Canada and twice returning to while living in pms on the i enjoyed the convenience and affordability of military housing that is abundant As a result of the German army recent having lived in military housing for 20 i found Shiloh Homes Comfort moderately priced and Well main i now own a very affordable Home outside the base and find the Community to be Friendly and the military should indeed concern itself with the human Factor of life for its troops and first and decisions such As this one should place military needs As priority deciding not to move 2ppcli to Shilo based on Quality of life con Cerns would be a slap in the face to those presently stationed if Shilo is not Good enough for Why is it adequate for the other military Mem Bers presently stationed Here once again the Issue of perimeter itis rears its ugly Yvette Kirk Shilo Winnipeg free press Winnipeg free presses 1872 Winnipeg Tribune est 1890 vol1zj n0102 2001 Winnipeg
