French wine and Caesar salad i had some friends who ate Only food with foreign names and others who eat anything that had a i accepted and respected them All regardless of Creed or dietary pref although i suspected that what they ate might reveal something about who they after if Peoples character could be understood by their their birth their even by their Colour then Why not by their eating habits i began to look More thoughtfully into Peoples some were anorexia Cally Barren a Flat diet Shiv eled lettuce and a leftover to some were Rich with indulgences exotic fruits and dressings and drink most of them spoiled or others seemed choked with righteousness Brown Rice and organic Chard and jars of unwholesome looking herbal when i met her fridge glistened with Green Garden fresh bagels and Cream i was she was not As impressed with my she frowned at my bottomless pot of Mac my Economy tubs of Peanut butter and my sliced meats and pizzas in various states of searching she found some things that even i didst i did some soul some fridge cleaning and we overcame our differ for the Good of the relationship i agreed to give up my Crock my specially had been stewed As i so did the food i i now consider myself a bit Square but in a healthy i might have turned out differ of Over the years i have been swayed by Many influences and attracted to Many food my College was a draft dodger from Detroit who lived on a regime of pringles potato Lavatts Beer and cheer Whiz on Ritz he declared that he was immune to All illness As Long As he ate a sunday Batch of Uncle Bens White Rice soaked in soy soy sauce hed sing its the elixir of life i was developing More than a taste for his cusine de Junque until i noticed that his hair was falling out in he eventually confessed the reason for his bizarre eating habits he was rebelling against his a powerful executive who kept two double fridges for there was always a crowd at their sumptuous dinners and it had Felt crowded Orange glow i almost joined an Urban collective of Young Bliss bunnies who literally glowed with the higher reality they claimed came from macrobiotic As it turned the glow was an Orange tint in their skin from their fanatical diet of organic Carrot my fondest memories Are of a Southern Ontario minister and his inspiring people who generously welcomed me into their Home where i stayed for even attending Church with i admired i wanted to be like them but i could not manage to eat like they favoured Quarter sandwiches of Devil led each family member would have three Quarter a Glass of juice and a scoop of jell0 for to such Light eating was a mystery As great As the Miracle of loaves and yet they thrived and were All unnervingly healthy and their practice of eating adequate amounts of food simply to satisfy hunger seemed so reasonable and enlightened that it threatened every thing id been raised to in my too much was barely for i Lay awake with my mind and my stomach in i kept recalling my immigrant grandmothers parting eat eat until finally i when everyone was asleep i sneaked out like a Monk deserting his monastery to Gorge in the sinful flesh pots of the in this Mcdonalds and Tim Hor i suppose How you eat depends on How you were As a i went Home every Day for or rather i went to my parents clothing store on main Street where my Mother would ring open the Cash Register and give me Money for the deluxe theatre Coffee lunch counter food and plenty of it was my nurture and my by the time i reached Junior my dad had opened berts corned beef House in West Kildonan and every night at bedtime id phone in the same berts Whall it be my dad would holler into the receiver above the Racket of the pinball and Juke i id Gimme two corned beef on Rye no a bag of Plain an 0 Henry and a Coke hed two corned beef on Rye no a bag of Plain an 0 Henry and a Coke Canadian press dishes like borscht can stick with you All your id you got it then hed yell Good love you love maybe the food you love depends on whom you love and who loves i have searched for years for the particular kind of brownies my Mother used to its my mammas manna never to be tasted again in this tastes like soap i have was aching for a big bowl of steaming hot borscht with grated hunks of boiled beef and a Side order of fresh Rye my Mouth was watering As i reached Homeland of the jews which by definition meant Homeland of jewish i searched Tel Aviv until i found a restaurant with borscht on the menu and i called out my order before i even sat the place was As shabby and relaxed As my beloved Northend delis oscars the Oasis i grinned at the families eating together and thought How much must love this food and How being raised on the same kinds of food Bonds us to a shared a common a bowl clattered in front of the borscht was As Clear As Cran Berry juice and just As the wait Ress saw my you dont like the borscht that How we eat it Here in she said with a maybe you want some pita bread to go with it
