Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - June 21, 2004, Winnipeg, Manitoba Monday june 21, 2004 by Patti Edgar and Helen falling two City councillors and a candidate for mayor say it appears former City councillor Garth Steek is winding Down his mayoral Campaign in a bid to Clear a path to Victory for businessman Sam Katz. Councillors Russ Wyatt and Peter de Smedt two Well known supporters of Steek a candidacy both say they Are Dis appointed in the final week of Steek a Campaign. He has to run a full Board Campaign argues Wyatt who encouraged friends and family to work on Steek a Campaign and endorsed the candidate in his Transcona Ward. Wyatt says Steek a office has sat empty in the evenings even though he installed a phone system capable of dial ing 2,000 voters a night. A 10-Point plan Wyatt helped draw up called Back to the basics was never used by Steek in his platforms or advertisements. Nothing happened Wyatt said. He basically buried mayoral hopeful Al Golden mused after a candidates forum yesterday that Steek might throw in the Towel As he did in the last civic election and endorse Katz. Steek said last night he is aware that Wyatt in to Happy with his approach to this Campaign but insisted he has tried his Best. I am proud of what we have done in this Campaign. Whether or not we Are going to win i can to say but i took the moral High Road and brought a lot of issues to the Campaign that would to have been there if i Wyatt said ? and Steek confirmed last night when contacted by the free press ? that the two shared a Glass of wine at Steek a River Heights Home on saturday night. Wyatt believes that Steek is running his Campaign to support Katz Low Balling his campaigning cutting Adver Tising keeping a Low profile and attacking Vandal and Golden As much As possible. Its a phantom Campaign that he has got going Here. My reaction was anger. I said you know what you could have fought instead of looking at the num Bers Wyatt said. Steek last night said his saturday night discussion with Wyatt was simply about Wyatt a unhappiness with his Campaign. At an All candidates forum yesterday Steek repeatedly praised Katz and did not Challenge the platform of his main competitor for the business vote. When somebody does something extraordinary you a better acknowledge it Steek said of Katz a tireless Pursuit a few years ago of government support for the new Gold eyes Ball Park at the Forks.
