The list of candidates in the wards of River Heights fort Garry and St. Boni face includes 13 names but Only two will make it to City Council. Seven candidates ? Marcel Boville Emile chartier Murray Cliff Derek Hay Franco Magnifico Roland Marcoux and Tom Scott ? Are competing in St. Boniface to replace Dan Vandal on City Council. Vandal stepped Down last month to run for mayor. Meanwhile in River Heights fort Garry the names of six candidates ? Donald Benham Elaine Cowan Jocelyn Greenwood Brook Jones John Orlikov and Ken Wong ? will be on the ballot. The seat opened up when Garth Steek entered the mayors race. Wong who owns a travel and consulting business is hoping to rejoin City Council 30 years after leaving civic politics. He represented the old Rolshouse Ward from 1974-77. Two candidates with name recognition Are Benham a former journalist and communications adviser to former mayor Glen Murray and Orlikov a cur rent school Board trustee. But Cowan the president of the Anoka Iwin training Institute and a former woman entrepreneur of the year in Manitoba in 2000, said the race is by no Means decided. I am comfortable and confident we Are among a Strong group of con tenders she said before heading out to Knock on doors yesterday. We knew we would face the Challenge of name recognition so we worked to combat that. We Are peaking at the right time. Our momentum is moving along just As we Jones 26, a recent political science graduate from the University of Manitoba had an interesting first crack at civic politics two years ago. The former track athlete with the u of m bosons faced off against Jenny Ger Basi and captured a third of the vote ? a Large slice for a new candidate challenging an incumbent. I think definitely my grassroots Community involvement Speaks volumes for the dedication i want to bring to City Hall said Jones also known in the Community for the Large Christmas display he constructed annually at his at parents Home on Mcdougall Street. I think the election will be a lot closer than people Greenwood who was Busy Campaign ing in Linden Woods yesterday agreed. I think it will be very tight said Greenwood who works As a consultant and advocate. People Are looking for someone to believe in. Its an important election even thought its just for two years. In those two years the person has to prove they can stick by their word. And i in St. Boniface candidates were Busy knocking on doors Over the weekend including Boville a real estate agent who spent much of the time in Norwood yesterday. He maintained there Are no Clear front runners contrary to what he says a local French language weekly paper suggested last week. According to Boville the newspaper said the most serious candidates Are Roland Franco and Emile and they Are ahead of the pack. I fail to see How they can say that Boville said. For someone to suggest i am not serious ? when i am working my Tail off during this election ? is an insult. From the responses i am getting i feel i have an equal Murray Cliff working the streets in Island lakes yesterday said tomorrows Winner must do a better Job representing the entire Ward. I get mixed messages from people in the area. I am hearing that Vandal neglected some of the areas Cliff said. I agree there is a lot of work involved and its not an easy position. All i can do is be sincere in saying i am up for the challenge.?. Here a what the new mayor plans to do first
