Breaks for homeowners who renovate switchboard 697-7000 Katz continued from Page a1 the planned $51-million rapid transit route Between downtown and the University of Manitoba is on Katz a list especially with Premier Gary doer offering to be open minded about the Fate of a recently signed funding agreement Between the City the province and the Federal government that includes rapid transit the Kenaston underpass and cleaning up the City a sewage treatment system. The incoming mayor also questioned the feasibility of finding a restaurateur willing to fill the empty space on the new Esplanade Riel which was equipped with Power sewer and water lines for $1 million. City staff say there Are applications to fill the space but can to say How Many. I know quite a few restaurateurs and they were offered that for absolutely nothing and they Haven to jumped up to take that Over Katz said. I Don to think that was Well thought on Katz a to do list Over the next few Days is deciding just who he wants to work with. As mayor Katz gets to pick six councillors to join his executive policy committee which not Only comes with a $12,800 a year raise but the hefty task of chairing a City committee. The committee is bound for a shakeup ? three current members backed Dan Vandal and Only one Bill Clement showed up at Katz a Victory Celebration tuesday night. And there Are two new faces on Council River Heights coun. Donald Benham and St. Boniface coun. Franko Magnifico. But yesterday Katz said he wont make any changes to the committee right away although he will hire his own staff. In the mayors office there is Only one political staffer left from a High of four under Murray. Across from City Hall in the administration build ing Katz could also make changes to staffing in the executive policy committee secretariat the policy office for the mayors inner Circle of councillors. Just Over a year ago Murray hired Gordon Vidal a Liberal party mover and Shaker for the top Job in that office. Vidal might not jibe with Katz a mostly tory Campaign team. There Are Only four policy staff under Vidal right now with titles like intergovernmental affairs coordinator and aboriginal affairs Liaison but at one Point Murray had six. These contract jobs All come with salaries rang ing from $52,000 to More than $100,000. There have also been rumours that Katz will try to replace Annitta Stenning who left Centre Ven Ture in september to become the City of Winnipeg a chief administrative officer although that a a Posi Tion appointed by Council. Stenning a predecessor made $186,000 a year. While Katz had promised to put the Gold eyes and Showtime productions into a Blind Trust if he was mayor yesterday he said he checked with City staff and its Likely he wont need to go that far. City rules say Katz Only has to give the City a chief clerk a list of assets and interests which will remain private. The onus will be on Katz to step aside when he is in a conflict of interest. If there a speculation that he in to owning up to a conflict the clerk will Check the list and make a ruling. Scrapping rapid transit has Jenny Gerbasi a Favourite of Murray and a Backer of Vandal Ner Vous. She cautioned that the transit idea was care fully scrutinized for Cost and benefits and its a part of a 30-year plan to improve transportation in Winnipeg. City government is More Complex than it seems on the Campaign Trail. A lot of the candidates made promises that May be Tough to keep she said. There May be efficiencies to be found but there a the real problem of a Lack of while Katz May have been picking apart Mur rays pet projects yesterday the former mayor walked at the suggestion that Katz s Victory amounts to a repudiation of his last six years at City Hall. I find that so ridiculous and i find that almost offensive said Murray. What was remarkable was How few differences there were. No one was talking about raising prop erty taxes. No one was debating the idea that we need to invest in research and development arts and culture. No one was debating the need to get some share of new Revenue including Gas tax to fix our Murray said Katz was the Symbol of what Murray tried to do at City Hall ? forming Public private partnerships to build things such As can West glob Al Park.
