Scott 85, one of the longest serving primates of the anglican Church of Canada died instantly monday in a car crash North of Toronto. He was in a car driven by a longtime family Friend when it went off the Road hit a Metal guide rail and landed upside Down on a Metal Culvert near Parry sound ont. His Friend Sonja Bird 85, suffered non life threaten ing injuries and was taken to Hospital. Scott served As primate for the country a two million anglicans from 1971 to 1986. Although Scott travelled the world and served in Many Canadian parishes during his Long ministry the soft archbishop spoken anglican priest with the Strong Ted Scott social conscience had deep roots in Winnipeg. From 1949 to 1955, he served As Rector of two parishes that no longer exist the Church of St. John the Baptist and St. Jude a according to an official obituary released yesterday by the anglican Church of Canada. Later he became director of social services and priest director of Indian work for the diocese of Rupert a land the obituary notes. He was Well loved in Winnipeg Pate said. The two first met 55 years ago when Pate was a boy of 10 at a Church sponsored children scamp in Manitoba. Another Friend retired Rupert a land Bishop Patrick Lee said Scott a death hit hard. Scott was the Church a social conscience his friends suggested yesterday and a Man of great patience and Grace who gave everybody who met him the sense that they were Valu Able As human beings. Yet Scott was both praised and maligned when he served As the youngest primate of the anglican Church of Canada for 15 years in the socially turbulent decades of the 1970s and 1980s. Back then he was one of the first Church leaders to openly oppose apartheid work that earned him the epithet the red primate. Later he was instrumental in anglican Church efforts to free Nelson Mandela. More recently he waded into the same sex marriage controversy with the same gusto he a fought against apartheid. He performed a Blessing at Toronto a Church of the holy Trinity last september for a lesbian couple who were legally married and saw same sex marriages As a matter of social tolerance and compassion. Funeral arrangements have not been finalized. Lack of policing puts northerners at risk mayor by Helen falling the mayor of South Indian Lake is asking the province to declare a state of emergency in the Community because of poor policing he claims is putting residents at risk. Moose wants a permanent ramp detachment in the grow ing Community of South Indian Lake but Hourihan said new detachments take several years to plan and move ahead in the context of National priorities. Hourihan said it May be possible to improve response times in South Indian Lake by better scheduling of trips or better use of the ferry. Yesterday the City a executive policy committee voted to table a 40-Page report on the strategy until july when the committee next meets with new mayor Sam Katz at the Helm. The environmental strategy in limbo for More than a year was drawn up by civic environment committee which includes Well known scientists and Community advocates on its Volunteer Board. The report contains dozens of recommendations on everything from Urban sprawl to recycling to pesticide use. Coun. Gord Steeves said he was disappointed the committee could to stick with the original timeline but added pushing it Back three weeks so the strategy could be properly discussed was appropriate.
