A4 Winnipeg free press Friday july 2, 2004 killer gets draw fulfils dream of cottage life term after second conviction by Mike Mcintyre Sheldon Mckay bragged about the 1992 Throat slashing killing of a Winnipeg woman and partied hard after the 2000 stabbing death of a City teen. Now a Manitoba judge has done her part to ensure there will be no More macabre celebrations for Mckay by sentencing him to life in prison following his second manslaughter conviction. Mckay 26, simply Shook his head in apparent disgust wednesday As Queens Bench Justice Lea Duval rejected his bid for an additional four years behind bars and gave him the rarely used maximum sentence. Duval also ordered prison officials to place Mckay on suicide watch after defence lawyer Martin Glazer said his client could to handle such a lengthy penalty. In this Case there Are few mitigating factors. There Are however a Large number of aggravating circumstances said Duval. At the top of the list is the fact Mckay got involved in the fatal group attack on Adrien Bruyere 18, Only three months after he was released on parole for serv ing two thirds of his 10-year manslaughter sentence. Mckay was actually absent without leave from a Halfway House when he and several friends swarmed Bruyere in a Mcphillips Street parking lot. The group fled the scene leaving the victim to die on the pavement and retreated to a nearby House to continue drinking. Or. Mckay took a leadership role in the Case of Bruyere and treated the House party after the stabbing As a Vic tory Celebration said Duval adding he has shown no remorse for his actions. Mckay even refused to let one of his friends leave the Home for medical treat ment. The Man who was also charged in the killing had suffered a serious facial injury. Mckay was Only 16 years old when he pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the Throat slashing death of his girlfriends Mother. He openly boasted about the killing to police. His lawyer raised eyebrows in court this week when he argued Mckay should to be warehoused in prison and compared the plight of his killer client to that of an innocent Young victim of War. The image of an inmate languishing in prison in tas compelling As a legless child who has stepped on a landmine. But it too is a human tragedy said Glazer. He urged Duval to give Mckay a Light at the end of the Tunnel and requested a sentence in the eight year Range once pre trial custody was factored in. Of the seven other people charged with killing Bruyere two were granted immunity in Exchange for their Testi Mony. Three men including a juvenile pleaded guilty to manslaughter and received sentences in the Range of four to six years. Two others pleaded guilty to assault. Ironically it was Duval who sentenced Mckay on his first manslaughter conviction More than a decade ago.
