Fogging continued from Page a1 anti pesticide activist Dan Moroz warned this week that the City is using last years malathion Supply and that the chemical becomes More toxic after storage. But Ken Nawolski of the City a insect control Branch said that Only Hap pens at High temperatures. The City a malathion is stored at 15 c. Along with the Rise in mosquitoes a similar Rise has been seen in the num Ber of homeowners signing up to pre vent fogging being done within 100 metres of their residences. As of wednesday 400 homeowners had signed up a jump of almost 300 in a week. Lincoln Poulin of Poulin a pest control services said his company is also hired to kill mosquitoes but i be never had anyone say they re having it done because the City a not doing anything. They just want the extra Krista Moody who lives in South St. Vital said she hired matrix to fog her Yard before holding a family function earlier this month. It was great ? i would definitely do it again Moody said. The mosquitoes Are horrible out Here but after they fogged the mosquitoes were non existent for our Gath ering. I a glad the City will be Julie Scarpino of the City a insect control Branch said there a nothing the City can do ? or wants to do ? about the Pri vate fogging. People can always have a private company come to fog on their own private property Scarpino said. But because we re a service provider for the Public we have to respect the Scarpino said its the same As a Home owner applying insecticide to his Lawn. She said homeowners who have said no to fogging Are spread throughout the City but there a a Good concentration of them in the Wolseley area. But we can still Access that area. Well treat the areas we can and respect All the Buffer Steve Kirk who has registered his Wolseley area organic grocery store with the City so it in to fogged expressed Surprise when he heard a Neighbour could override his concerns by hiring a private company. If somebody knows they re going to be adversely affected they should be Able to make sure its not sprayed around them Kirk said. Id be in favour of people having the right not to have it sprayed at them. If it takes provincial legislation to do that i a in favour of Glenda Whiteman of concerned residents of Winnipeg is calling for a moratorium on All Mosquito fogging in the City. Her open letter this week to pre Mier Gary doer and mayor Sam Katz says malathion increases the risk of West Nile by killing off insect Preda tors and weakening the Birds and peo ple that carry the virus.
