In Manitoba the improbable Liberal minority has Given Rise to several important questions about the Canadian political Economy the major parties and what kept voters at Home. Why was voter turnout so Low the most hotly contested Federal election in a Quarter of a Century should have drawn apathetic voters off the Couch and into the school gymnasium. Instead Only 63 per cent of registered voters showed up slightly better than the 61 per cent in the 2000 general election. Even in those Manitoba Ridings where it was a real dogfight results were disheartening. Only 1,100 additional votes were cast in Charleswood St. James to decide the Steven Fletcher Glen Murray tilt. A Battle of two incumbents in Winnipeg North ? my Judy was lycia leis for the nip and Cabinet minister Rey Pagtakhan for the liberals ? Drew an extra 900 voters. Some candidates believe Many voters especially those who support the liberals were just too darn disillusioned to vote. Campaign teams spend much of their time before a Day phoning around the Riding identify ing those who Are for their candidates and those who Are against them. Then on election Day they Call again trying to find out if potential support ers Are actually going to show up. Its called get Ting the vote out. In Winnipeg Centre grit candidate David Northcott said he discovered Many voters who had indicated during the Campaign they were lib eral supporters announced on election Day they weren to going to vote. They did to want a conservative government Northcott said but they were disappointed in the liberals for the sponsorship scandal and other missteps. Among Canadian provinces and territories Only two ? Newfoundland and Labrador and Nunavut ? had a lower turnout than Manitoba. Speaking of Glen Murray where did he disappear to during the election it was More than a bit surprising that Murray a master communicator had virtually no Media profile during the Cam ;
