by Nick Martin b Randon High school athlete Colin Oakes could launch a Legal Challenge of Manitoba a sports eligibility rules that say he can to play sports at a school in which he in to enrolled. Brandon school division has told Oakes that he cannot attend Grade 11 at Neelin High school this fall and play football for Crocus Plains regional secondary school his Mother Lucille Canart said yesterday. I think it sucks. My son wants to Call a lawyer she said. Canart said she is filing an Appeal to the Manitoba High schools athletic association though she figures that a a waste of time. Canart said that Oakes is enrolled in French immersion which is Only offered at Neelin. He was an outstanding run Ning Back in Community minor football and plays basketball for Neelin she said. Oakes thought when he entered Neel in in Grade 9 that the school planned to introduce varsity football. He played Junior varsity nine Man football for Cro Cus Plains in Grade 9 without a problem but when he tried to play varsity foot Oakes sat out a year of football but tried again this Spring to be allowed to go to Neelin and play football for Crocus Plains. I got a letter this past week basically telling me too bad she said. He has to make a big decision Over the summer. He just wants to get a Chance to play football but stay in his Neelin pro Grams she said. Its a whole identity As Well. He goes to a certain school his friends Are there. My sons been in French immersion his whole life and bilingualism is a positive As but officials made it Clear that the rules require students to enrol at the school where they want to play sports. They have to have some Basic rules said Dwight Kearn Brandon school divisions phys de consultant. Kearn said the main concern is that a student May lose a spot on his own school team to a student from another school. What happens to the kid at that school and someone gets their spot he said. The Manitoba High schools athletic association rules say you play where you re enrolled said a Hasa executive director Morris Glimcher. Glimcher said Winnipeg school Divi Sion used to allow students whose school did not offer a particular sport such As that a unfair. It gives you a greater Pool to choose from and is that fair Glimcher asked. They want to go and play for the Good athletically Strong school which affects competitive balance he added. Glimcher said he hears More requests to play hockey at another school than he does for football. A handful of sports such As Field Lacrosse run under their own rules and take kids from other schools but they re a Small minority Glimcher said. There a no school that can be every thing to everybody Winnipeg school division phys de consultant Donna Crowe said. No High school can offer every academic program nor does any High school offer every possible sport she said. Enrol in the school that offers most of what you want she said. Life is about choices ? its fair to every kid to every sport she said. High school sports is High school sports not High school age sports Crowe said. There a tremendous Bene fit for playing for your school both for your school and for Crowe said some Rural schools Are allowed to Combine to make a team because neither by itself has enough Ball at Crocus Plains this past septem football to play at another school but enrolment to Field teams in some sports. Colin Corneau / Brandon Sun Ber Brandon school division told him that practice has ended. To choose one school Oakes said. If your kid got Cut for an outside kid.
