John Paul a fervent daily regimen left religious leaders in Awe by Jim Remsen p Philadelphia ? praying came As naturally As breathing to Pope John Paul ii. He might have said it differently that praying was breathing. Throughout his life from the first moment of each Day to the last John Paul kept a regimen of deep fervent devotions that left those around him even other religious leaders in Awe. As he said in the Early Days of his papacy prayer which in so Many ways expresses our relationship to the living god is the Popes first duty and his first message the first condition of his service to the Church and the during his Vatican years health permitting John Paul would spend As Many As seven hours a Day in prayer adoration and contemplation. In great souls six who saved the Century journalist David Aikman described the routine Dur ing the pontiffs prime John Paul ii is at prayer in his private Chapel by 6 15 ., at times prostrate on the floor at times actually groaning in the Travail of inter cession. During moments of Down time amid the panoply of solemn Public appearances he again and again closes his eyes tightens his facial Muscles in concentration sometimes shades his eyes with his hand and withdraws to that inner sealed room of his soul where he communicates with a key aspect of John Paul a spiritual surren Der involved suffering. As a Young Man in Poland he had been profoundly influenced by a local tailor and religious charismatic Jan Leopold Tyranowski who guided him toward mysticism and the belief that suffering is a gift from god. This first came to world awareness years later after his May 1981 shooting by a would be Assassin. As John Paul told a crowd of pilgrims in St. Peters Square upon his recuperation during the last months god permitted me to experience suffering and the danger of losing my life. He also allowed me to understand clearly. That this was one of his special graces for in the last years during his Long decline John Paul a visible surrender to his Many infirm for would be Assassin forgiveness and mercy
by Matthew Hay Brown the men sit face to face their Knees touching. One wears what appears to be a drab Blue shirt and jeans. A couple of Days growth of Beard frames a downcast face. The other wears a flowing White Robe. His head bowed he seems to be listening intently. It is two Days after Christmas 1983, and Pope John Paul ii has come to the Reb Ibbia prison on the outskirts of Rome to visit Mehmet Ali Aga. Two and a half years earlier Aga had wounded the pontiff gravely in a shooting attack in St. Peters Square. Images of John Paul talking with his would be Assassin circulated by the Vatican and transmitted throughout the world would prove As powerful and enduring As any homily presenting a living example of the forgiveness and reconciliation the Pope would make Central to his 26-year pontificate. The obvious parallel would be Jesus forgiving people from the Cross says the Rev. James Martin associate editor of the roman Catholic Magazine America. Forgiveness is really at the heart of the Christian message. He was giving us in his own Way a parable for our while showing the world a positive image of christianity the meeting would help the roman Catholic Church to move on from the attack increase John Paul a personal stature As a moral Leader and add authority to his historic Pursuit of forgiveness for the sins of the Church. It showed that he really believed what he was telling us about forgiveness and mercy and the dignity of each person and extending that caring focus even to the person who tried to take his life says Stephen Pope a professor of theology at Boston College. He was a great Man of symbols and that was one of the key symbols of his John Paul actually had pardoned Aga Long before their meeting. In memory and identity conversations spanning millenniums published earlier this year he writes that he told his per Sonal Secretary i forgive the Assassin As he was rushed to the Hospital that Day in May 1981. Later he asked the faithful to Pray for my brother whom i have sincerely Martin says those comments disseminated widely helped the faithful begin to heal. At a time when the world was still getting to know the new Pope the example of his forgiveness would enhance his moral authority in ties stood As a testament to that belief. John Paul saw suffering As Union with Christ said the Rev. Frederick l. Miller a spiritual director at the pontifical North american College in Vatican City. That a the mystical Side of his Faith. And he offered it for the Church. Everyone through baptism is called to that but the Pope As vicar of Christ has a Mission to be totally conformed to in All ways John Paul born Karol Wojtyla stood for classic Catholic religiosity. Chroniclers say that he loved the daily rituals from his earliest age and that As the adversities of life in Poland struck one by one he made Faith his Armour and his Blanket. As a boy Wojtyla joined the local Marian modality and established a lifelong Devotion to Mary for which he became famous. Years later As John Paul ii he told a delegation of american Bishops that prayer is both a conversation with god and actual Contact with without a deep experience of prayer he said growth in the moral life will be ? Knight Ridder newspapers the world. The experience would add weight to his pleas that the Church be forgiven for its transgressions. At an unprecedented Day of Pardon mass at St. Peters Basilica in March 2000, John Paul asked gods forgiveness for the sins of catholics through the Ages including wrongs inflicted on jews women and minorities. ? by Tara Brautigam Toronto ? for an entire generation he was the Only Pope they Ever knew. Throughout his 26-year papacy Pope John Paul had a unique yet at times tumultuous relationship with Young people worldwide. At 58, he became the youngest Pope in 132 years inheriting an ancient institution in Sham Bles some observers said at the time. Many priests and nuns had left the roman Catholic Church which faced a widening Gulf with its younger followers. A string of sex abuse scandals throughout the 1980s and 1990s further rattled the Church a relationship with youth. The Vatican a Strong stand against same sex marriage also pushed away some younger More progressive catholics who increasingly saw the Church As an aging institution not keeping up with the times. John Paul embarked upon a series of changes to rekindle ties with Young people while staying True to catholicism a More conservative views. In 1986, the Pope started world youth Day an annual Celebration intended to revitalize the roman Catholic Church a Bond with believers 16 to 35 years of age from around the Globe. He knew their aspirations he knew what they were looking for in their lives said father Jarek Pachocki of our lady of perpetual help Cathedral in Labrador City fld. Pachocki led a group of 50 youths to John Paul a seven Day Stop in Toronto for world youth Day festivities in july 2002. It was then the Pope acknowledged the clergy a sins and failings in dealing with the sex abuse scandals. Despite visibly suffering from symptoms of Parkinson a disease he said he was Young at heart and that the enthusiasm exhibited by the Young pilgrims re energized him. At one Point during his visit he ventured away from his handlers and toward a group of Admir ers. He unexpectedly picked up a two year old boy in his and kissed him on the Cheek. At sunday mass he blessed More than 800,000 worshippers As some of them chanted ?jp2, we love almost three years later his visit still res onates among those who were there. It was like a personal encounter with a cherished Friend said Raegen Walleyn a 25-year?old Winnipeg Ger who is also helping organize this Summers world youth Day in Germany. That a so remarkable to have that gift to make people feel like you see them and you hear Walleyn who is about to Start a masters degree in music and Liturgy said she found her self on the verge of tears and smiling at the same time As news of the Popes death sunk in because she a grateful for his life and How it has inspired her to live by his example of com passion. ?
