Win Stock. Ca sponsored in part by the Winnipeg free press by Bill Redekop a Rinaud while Hunting in dense Bush near the Minnesota Border years ago Peter Dyck stumbled upon a startling sight a forgotten cemetery. The cemetery was completely forested Over with tall poplars. There was no Church on the grounds nor a Road leading to it. The grave markers dated As far Back As 1868. That got Dyck thinking about the local graveyard where his father and others Are buried. So he thought of a Way to ensure those ancestors be forgotten erect a Large Boulder with their names on it. The Village of Arnaud about 100 Kilometres South of Winnipeg is actually a mispronunciation of the name of father Aubineau one of 20 missionaries killed by Sioux indians in 1736 on massacre Island on Lake of the Woods. Arnaud started in 1877, according to a local history Book Arnaud through the years. In the 1950s, a Naudus population peaked at 212 residents. Dyck estimates just 30 or so people live Here today barely enough to look after the towns three cemeteries. Dyck and his Friend Henry Schulz spent months scouring the Countryside looking for just the right Rock for their commemorative Boulder. The longer i looked the worse it got explained Dyck 78, a retired Farmer. One Day they spotted a landowner by the Roadside putting up a barbed wire Fence. The Man had used a front end loader to remove a number of boulders in the path of his Fence line. One Boulder in particular caught Dycks fancy. It weighed three tonnes. Next came tracking Down the descendants of people in the cemetery for possible donations. There Are 26 people buried in the cemetery six with no grave markers on the grounds where a former mennonite Church once stood. Most of the people were buried there in the 1930s and 40s. Dyck tracked Down All but one family including three families As far away As British Columbia. Most agreed to give Small donations. One family wanted to strike a committee. I said the committee has been struck. Its me Dyck recalled. Its a Rural thing his brother Nick explained of Dycks Peculiar obsession. Dyck is the picture of a retired Farmer lanky Ruddy and not afraid of Long silences Between conversation. He was born in Siberia after his parents fled Ukraine in 1924 because communism was making it impossible to farm. When the bolsheviks began to put their blueprint on Siberia too Dycks father John inquired about immigration and was imprisoned. After his release a month later he used All his Money to bribe his and his family is Way out of the country. The family arrived in Southeastern Manitoba in 1934, and were picked up at the train station by the same family Whord sold them their farm in Siberia. The family also brought an estimated 150 year old Kroeger clock still operating like those that Many mennonite settlers brought with them to Canada. Back to the commemorative Rock donations were gathered and Altona memorials did the engraving. It was two years in the making but the Rock was finally installed in the cemetery late last summer. The entire project Cost about $ 3,000. My next project is to find a Church Bell. I love Church Bells said Dyck. Its a Rural thing As his brother would say. Bill. Redekop free press. My. Ca retired Farmer finds forgotten cemetery commemorative Boulder now Marks site relatives of deceased tracked Down kindness continued from Page a 1 on this Day alone Mandi is being presented with a $ 750 Cheque from health depot and planning two fundraisers with the employees of Winnipeg moving and storage As Well As a Bitzs cafe and lounge in St. Francois Xavier. Its really a coincidence i picked up the newspaper that Day and read coleus Story but hearing about How Mandi manages to hold everything together was incredible said a Bitzs owner Tammy Ackland who opened her restaurant last August in the 500 person towns converted nunnery. Ackland has approached her various suppliers about providing prime red meat Shell Cook up and serve in coleus name and a Bitzs six employees Are volunteering their help for a child the eyed never previously met. Ackland and her employees Are not alone in extreme acts of kindness As the self described jeans and fleece Guys who run imagine contracting can illustrate. After being contacted to consult on the Heinsz new Homes renovations designed with the ongoing care of Cole in mind the workers volunteered the 500 hours of labour required after recalling the free press Story about the family. I dont really Tell a lot of people because the eyed probably look at me funny and think ism crazy says David Juselius who co owns the six month old business with partner Edward Suderman and has been putting in late nights making sure the Walls Are framed right. Juselius admits he a snot even told his Mother about his offer. He says his gift of time is More Long Range business planning and concern for the welfare of the family than wide eyed Youthful naivete. I had a Chance to talk to some very successful american business owners when i worked at a Lodge up North he says sounding Gruff. They taught me if you re in it solely to make Money you wont make anything. You think of your customers first. Bill Redekop / Winnipeg free press Dyck found a commemorative Rock for the cemetery and tracked Down most of the relatives of the deceased. Champions continued from Page a 1 thatus when Nedohin haired by another guard and chipped out another scottish Stone for yet another five Ender and an 11 3 Lead. The scots Drew to an empty House with the last Rock of the next end taking one and conceding defeat. They just made All the shots that end Murdoch said of Canadas first five Ender and we did not. It was a bit of a shocker of an end. But were a Young team. Hopefully we can come Back and do what Rand yes team has done. That will be a tall order. Yesterdays Victory for the Ferbey foursome Ferbey Nedohin second Scott Pfeifer and Lead Marcel Rocque was dripping with history. Their third world title in four years. Fer Beyus fourth world title making him the first menus curler to win four world titles in More than 40 years and putting him in the select company of Only the legendary Ernie Arnold and Sam Richardson of Saskatchewan who pulled off the feat with their fourth title in five years Way Back in 1963. The first menus team to win a Canadian or world championship coming through the tiebreakers of the Page playoffs. And Canadas record 29th world Curling championship dating Back to the Start of the menus worlds in 1959. Not bad for a Bunch of four burned out curlers Ferbey joked afterwards. The 45 year old skip was referring to speculation earlier in the week when the team was in danger of missing the playoffs with a 4 3 round Robin record that perhaps the foursome had exhausted themselves in a gruelling Winter where they attempted to become Canadas first professional curlers. Ill never forget this Victory said Rocque. Its the Best one by far. We stuck it out As a team and fought it out for Canada. While he never admitted it during the week Nedohin finally conceded yesterday that there were times Over the past week when he started to have doubts. You Start to think maybe its not our week he said. But All you can do is play As Well As you can and As hard As you can. And if its meant to be it will happen. Although they ave rewritten Curlings record books in recent years the biggest prize in Curling is still in front of them at next decembers olympic trials in Halifax where Canadas Curling representatives for the 2006 Winter olympics will be decided. Weave got one last goal said Ferbey and thatus to represent Canada at the olympics. Paul. Wiecek free press. My. Ca Chuck Stoody / Canadian press Nedohin has a really Good Day ;
