Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - April 12, 2005, Winnipeg, Manitoba Winnipeg free press tuesday april 12, 2005 City / District b7 boys injury prompts police warning about Pellet guns by Bruce Owen a n 11-year-old boy almost lost his left Eye sunday when another youth fired a Pellet gun at him police said yesterday. The incident which happened outside an apartment building on Grey Street in East Kildonan was one of eight instances this weekend in the City involving youths playing with Pellet and paintball guns. That prompted Winnipeg police to Issue a warning that parents or guardians ensure their children Are aware of the dangers of air guns. Police spokesman patrol sgt. Kelly Dennison said some of Pellet and paintball guns in the hands of a Young person could be mistaken for a real firearm by police. Obviously they could be construed As More than toys because they replicate a real firearm so closely Dennison said. The Law concerning soft air guns in Canada is confusing Pellet or paintball guns that look like real guns Are prohibited but in Many instances that is Only determined on a Case by Case basis. Dennison also said an officer think ing such a gun is real could draw his or her own weapon and use lethal Force if they believe their life is in danger. They pose a danger and a Hazard to the Winnipeg police service and Mem Bers of the Public he said. In the most serious instance this week end a group of children including an 11-year-old boy and his seven year old brother were outside 535 Grey St. Play ing when an older boy approached them with a Pellet gun. Dennison said the boy began firing the air gun ? it shoots tiny Metal pellets ? in All directions. The younger boy was hit in the upper Back and his older brother was hit in his face to the Side of his left Eye. Police were called and the two boys were taken to Hospital where they were treated and released. A 13-year-old boy was taken into custody and now faces two charges of assault with a weapon.
