Prime minister Paul Martin insisted he has the moral authority to continue governing but the growing corruption scandal Over the Federal sponsorship program has the opposition itching to pull the Campaign trigger. The first Chance the opposition has to bring Down the government comes thursday when the bloc Qutb Cois can submit a non Confidence motion. The conservatives however have already said they will not Back the bloc which Means the separatist party would not have the support it needs to topple the liberals. In his first Public comments after by aults testimony Martin made Clear he was angered by the revelations As he sought to keep his liberals in Power. Not Only do i have the moral authority to govern i have the moral responsibility to act and thatus what i have done and i have done that right from the beginning Martin told reporters. I was As offended As any other Canadian even if that testimony is contested i was personally offended by what i heard. That is not the Way that politics is done in Quebec. It is not the Way that politics should be done in Canada and it is certainly not the Way that i believe that politics should be done. The prime minister added he was the one who cancelled the sponsorship program fired the Heads of the Crown corporations involved in the scandal and dumped Gagliano from his ambassadorial Post in Denmark. When i put the Gomery commission into place i understood that there would be political consequences. But calling that inquiry into place was the right thing to do he said. Martin again denied he played any role in the sponsorship scandal involving some $ 100 million from the $ 250 million Federal program which was spent for work of Little or no value. I can Tell you right now that i was not and its very Clear from the hearings that have been held so far that i was not. This is not the Way that i would do politics. Martins liberals Are also facing the possible defection of grit maps like David Kilgour who said the Liberal party is seen As looking on the Public Trust As a vulture looks on a dying calf. Nip Leader Jack Layton demanded the liberals refund the More than $ 1 million from the Federal sponsorship program that landed in the part yes War Chest. The prime minister May think his biggest problem is the Confidence in his government but the bigger problem right now is Confidence in our country because Liberal corruption is putting far More of a criminal and corrupt face on federalism As a result of this Liberal party Layton said. John Reynolds the tory my overseeing the part yes election planning confirmed that the party is busily preparing an election platform and nominating candidates. He said the conservative Campaign is ready to Roll if the Call comes. Treasury Board president Reg Alcock said he believes the liberals Are Well positioned even if they Are forced into an election Over the sponsorship scandal. The polls Are expressing the Peoples concern with what has gone on Here As we All Are but the Public will now As they did in the last election when we were campaigning on this before separate this prime minister from the previous regime and in fact see this prime minister As the author of a solution said Manitoba ass Cabinet minister.
