By Leah Janzen t he province is staging a third cottage lot draw this Spring despite flagging Public interest in the lottery and complaints about the Quality of the properties. Yesterday conservation minister Stan Struthers announced 457 cottage lots including 199 lots carried Over from last Falls draw that went unclaimed will be up for Sale or lease through a lottery process to be held june 14 and 15. Most of the lots available in this draw Are located in the Interlake Lac Dubonnet Lake Winnipeg St. Malo and Grindstone area. The draw includes 187 waterfront properties and six new subdivisions. Lot prices Range from $ 1,500 to $ 55,000 with Many in the $ 7,000 to 15,000 Range. Struthers said the province Learned from last years lacklustre draw results that most people interested in buying or leasing a cottage lot want the property to be within a Short drive of the capital Region. Our first draw was a general offering the second draw had a Central Northern focus and now this third draw will feature More southerly locations As we try to accommodate Manitoban from across the province he said. The previous two cottage lot draws have not been sellouts. Last Spring 374 cottage lots were up for grabs but Only 134 or 36 per cent were actually purchased once lottery winners were Able to see the land they won the right to buy or lease. Despite Struthers claims to the contrary the results in the fall 2004 draw were worse. In that draw held in the Pas 199 lots were offered and 64 properties or 32 per cent were sold. Some draw winners did not take advantage of their lottery win because they did not like the subdivision they were Given. Others complained the lots available were swampy or located far from the waterfront. Some of the properties up for grabs in the first lot draw had been for Sale for years but were of such poor Quality that would be purchasers were not interested. Struthers said 258 of the lots included in the draw this Spring Are new properties that have not been for Sale in the past. He added the province has reviewed the process and made some changes he believes will improve the draw. In the first draw held last Spring Struthers noted applicants were asked to choose their top 10 preferences in terms of location. The extensive Choice meant Many people who Drew lots in the Bottom half of their preference list did not bother to buy or lease the property. This year applicants will Only be Able to choose from three geographic areas. Struthers said the move will ensure More people like and keep the lots they win the right to buy. It costs $ 100 to enter into the draw. Application forms and information on the lots can be obtained on the internet wow. Gov. My. Ca conservation Cottaging. Application information can also be obtained at Manitoba conservation offices around the province. The june 14 and 15 draw is open to the Public but applicants Are not required to attend. Applicants who have applied and were successful in previous draws can still take part in the third lottery. Deadline for applications is May 27. Leah. Janzen free press. My.
