Ca section15 Section 15 of the Canadian charter of rights and freedoms guarantees that everyone in Canada is equal under the Law. Since april 1985, it has protected each of us and continues to define the kind of country we want to be. The charter. Its ours. Its us. Unique yet equal 20th anniversary of Section 15 of the Canadian charter of rights and freedoms by Sarah Schmidt m ont real one in four students in Grade 7 report being victims of Caber bullying according to a new Canadian study. In one of the first studies in this country to measure the negative uses of technology by the wired generation the University of Calgary yes Quing i surveyed 177 students in two Middle schools and also found More than half 53 per cent of the students reported they knew someone being Caber bullied. Fifteen per cent said they bullied others using electronic communication tools. I who released the results yesterday at the american educational research association conference did not find any significant gender Gap in either the victims or perpetrators of Caber bullying. Among the 25 per cent of students who reported being victims of Caber bullying 23 per cent had been assaulted Only by e mail 36 per cent in Chat rooms Only and the remaining 41 per cent by multiple sources including cellphone text messaging. I surveyed students in these two particular schools because they re involved in a Large educational technology integration project in Alberta and Are enthusiastically embracing technology. One school is located in a Middle class neighbourhood the other is in a less affluent Community. She cautioned that the introduction of electronic communication into classrooms for educational purposes can also provide students with additional opportunities to engage in Caber bullying which is particularly insidious because its victims do not leave the abuse behind in the schoolyard classroom or hallway. The threats and vicious words follow them Home and pop up on their computer screens and cellphones. More secretive Alberta is the most wired province in the whole nation and the schools Are wired. I cant say it contributes but it makes Caber bullying much easier and much faster and its More secretive i said in an interview. About one in three 32 per cent of the Caber bully victims said they were bullied by schoolmates 11 per cent by people outside their school and 16 per cent by multiple sources including schoolmates. But 41 per cent reported they did not know who was Caber bullying them. Shaheen Shariff a specialist education and the Law at Mcgill University has just launched a study with colleagues at Simon Fraser University to track Caber bullying in Quebec and British Columbia schools and educators responses to it. She said school administrators Are currently operating in a policy vacuum when it comes Caber bullying. What is the obligation in what i Call the virtual school environment As opposed to the physical environment where is the line and How far do they go in terms of supervision they cant supervise it but the problem is its classmates doing the harassment and its insidious. They can hide behind screen names but the fact is the victim has to come Back to class and face them but they dont know who they Are Shariff said in an interview.
