Head injury robbed John Sherby of himself the Man by Leah Janzen a Nasty Zipper like scar runs along John Sherby a right forearm and there a a slight hitch in his gait the Only outward evidence of the brutal beating this 45-year-old?s body took in a car Accident in 2003. While the compound fracture in his Arm healed along with countless other broken Bones and lacerations invisible wounds remain gaping and deep which have shattered Sherby a life and alienated him from his wife and Chil Dren. On oct. 18, 2003, Sherby became one of the 34,000 canadians who suf Fer a brain injury each year. His emotions memories personality and skills have been either stripped away or eroded beyond recognition. Its been a very difficult two years for his family and friends who struggle to understand the new John Sherby and mourn the Man they once knew. Who in to there on a sunny saturday morning in october 2003, Sherby left his cosy Transcona Home to meet a Friend for Coffee across town. He decided to take the perimeter Highway instead of battling traffic through the City. He was alone. His wife Dawn had stayed behind to take the couples daughter Christine to a birthday party before heading out with their eldest daughter Candace for lunch and some shop Ping. At lunch with Candace at a St. James eatery Dawn recalls having John pop into her head while she was sitting at the table. At the time she brushed off the thought of her husband but later she would wonder if it was at that moment his car was being slammed head on by an Sun on the North perimeter Dri Ven by a Young Man intent on killing himself. In the parking lot at the old Navy store in St. James dawns cellphone rang beside her. It was the ramp telling her to go to the health sciences Centre. The Man in the Sun died on Impact. Miraculously John survived the Accident and was even conscious As emergency personnel worked to extricate him from the wreckage. He told Rescue workers he was 14 years old and single. But today he has no memory of the Accident or of anything else from his past from family birthday parties to anniversaries. When Dawn was allowed to see John at the Hospital before he was wheeled into surgery she was surprised at How Good he looked. To her he looked like the husband she had known and loved for nearly 20 years. But Over the next few weeks and months she came to realize that her husband was gone.
