By de Tait imagine a Vinci taking a second look at the Mona Lisa and wondering if she use a Little makeup and More cleavage. Or if one Day Michelangelo took a break during his work on the ceiling of the sistine Chapel and said a screw it. Lets just go with an off White. In Many ways thatus the approach the Winnipeg Blue bombers first took immediately after fridays 29 0 spanking of the Hamilton Tiger cats the first bomber shutout since 1988 and just the second time since 1951 the tabbies have been kept off the scoreboard at Home. Yes despite allowing just 108 Yards total offence forcing five turnovers and sacking tical lbs five times the bombers get this wanted More. Head coach Doug Berry we have a lot of things that did not go our Way. There were probably two or three More interceptions we could have had. Defensive end Gavin Walls weave got plenty of room for Progress. I a vent even got in my rhythm yet. Tom Canada a snot maybe got into his rhythm yet. Defensive Back Anthony Malbrough theress still some things we need to work on definitely. All that said the More these Guys work together remember this is a new scheme under a new head coach and features at least six changes to the starting dozen the More they re coming to realize they Are building something special Here. Just seven games into working in Greg marshalls system the bomber defence leads the Cal with 24 sacks is first against the run and has shaved More than 100 passing Yards per game off its atrocious total of a year ago 351.9 in becoming the teams Backbone. This is just so much fun Malbrough said. I cant Tell you the last time i had this much fun. Guys Are flying around making plays and were winning you cant ask for much More in football. Added Berry those Guys Are really playing unbelievable right now. I just cant believe How Good our defence is right now. When we make mistakes it seems like were making them 100 Miles an hour. Were not pausing and saying of did i go the right Way a in the Middle of it. Were just going and maybe somebody behind is covering up. But were just playing so intensely. Thatus the thing thatus most exciting to me How hard we play. That was evident from the first moment the Ball was placed on the tee Friday in Hamilton to the final gun. With the tic ats starting no. 2 Pivot Kevin Eakin in place of Jason Maas who dressed but was suffering from a hip Pointer the bombers were in very Little danger of losing after jumping to a 22 nil Lead at halftime. The Only drama at the end of the game was whether the bombers could Complete what is almost unthinkable in the Cal pitching a defensive no hitter. That was definitely the Buzz on the defence As the game wore on said defensive Back Kelly Malveaux. We did not want to be a team that goes 3 1/ 2 quarters and then lets them score a cheap one at the end. Were just playing great As a team. Definitely Well look at the film and see some mistakes that we made but we just need to continue to get better As a team and grow and mature. And when we do look out. De. Tait free press. My. Ca to Days bomber report c3 Blue defensive gems. Fridays 29 0 win Over Hamilton was the 38th shutout in bomber history. The shutout was the first since 1988 and Only the sixth since 1970. Of the 38 shutouts in the bomber annals 21 came in the period from 1933 1950. The bombers have 17 shutouts on the Road including eight of their last 10. Five of the last six bomber shutouts have come against East opponents. Not including their defunct Cal opponents the bombers have now shut out every team but the Toronto argonauts. Fridays decision was the first shutout against Hamilton. Winnipeg has shut out Saskatchewan Regina 12 times and Calgary on nine occasions. Other victims Edmonton 3b. Most lopsided shutout july 5, 1986 Winnipeg 56 Saskatchewan 0 de Tait bombers defence looks like a masterpiece yet the artists still Arentt satisfied by Allan Besson h Ockey Hall of Famer Bobby Orr is working the rubber Chicken circuit this weekend. The rubber Chicken footballs soccer balls and pucks were used too is one of the props at the Chevrolet Safe and fun hockey program running from Friday till today at Dakota Community Centre. A Lucky 100 five to eight year old minor hockey players selected in a random draw to participate got to meet the nil legend and learn about Safe and fun hockey skills respect and responsibility. The kids May wonder Why they re fiddling around with a rubber Chicken said Orr who was on the ice with the youngsters yesterday. Well they re having fun first of All and they like it. But they re also working on their balance they re handling and passing the Chicken puck and they re working on their dexterity. Orr played with the Boston Bruins from 1966 to 1976, leading the team to Stanley cups in 1970 and 72, both times scoring the cup winning goal. In a career in which he scored 270 goals and assisted on 645, he won the Norris trophy As the no los top defence Man eight consecutive times and was named Hart trophy Winner As league map three times. Ism worried that Many Young players never experience the pure enjoyment of the game Orr said. As parents and coaches its our responsibility to ensure that everyone leaves the Arena with a positive experience. Whether you re going to be a superstar nil player or just a recreational player everyone should have the same Opportunity. Winning is too important to some coaches and parents. What they dont understand is that a very Small percentage make it. If your kid is playing minor hockey and hers pretty Good and even if you do everything right if he does not make it its Only because hers not Good enough. Orr preaches that parents coaches and teachers have to take control of the hockey programs they enrol their children in. We cant have a coach behind the Bench telling a bigger kid to go out and run Over a smaller kid. We cant have a Parent acting like a darn fool in the stands. Sometimes coaches Are screaming and Yelling As though their mortgage was at stake if they dont win a Peewee game and thatus ridiculous. Orr has no problem teaching Young players skills such As body checking but maintains that it needs to be understood and taught correctly if its going to be done safely. We ask the kids what is a Bod Check a and they say weave got to Knock the Guy Down. Well a Bod Check is taking the other player out of the play. You dont have to take him Down. We show the kids and Well have a Little kid Check one of the adults. It is just Angling and getting in a players Way. On the subject of face guards Orr says minor hockey players dont have a Choice they have to Wear them. However with the nil bringing in mandatory face guards it Isnit a licence to High stick. When we put equipment on kids to protect them i have no problem with that but you cant think that because they have a face guard we can let the stick go up High he said. A penalty is a penalty. Orr believes that pros have an obligation to be role models to younger players. We Are role models whether we want to believe it or not. Remember former Aba Star Charles Barkley he said ism not a role Model a but dammit he is a role Model whether he likes it or not. Thatus Why he makes the big Bucks. Thatus Why people pay to see him play. We have a responsibility to act properly. Now please pass the rubber Chicken. Allan. Besson free press. My.
