Theother Guy. e la during the second world War Young men avoiding conscription arrived in this railway town hoping to disappear. They roomed upstairs at Peter and Anna Kolegas House behind their Pool Hall. If authorities came knocking they could escape into a network of at least 50 metres of underground tunnels that Start in the basement Coal bin. The Concrete tunnels some of which can still be viewed today had at least three escape hatches. The men stayed with the Kolegas until the couple found a railway conductor perhaps through bribery to transport their guests to Bush Camps in Northern Ontario where no one asked questions. Thatus one of the More intriguing but hard to confirm tales told about the mysterious tunnels Peter Kolega built under his property 70 years ago. Ism just telling you what their grandson told me said Pearl Strelko who lived next door to the Kolegas for Many years. The grandson Bobby Kolega was the son of a daughter born out of Wedlock and raised by the Kolegas. He is dead now but at one Point he went to jail for writing bad cheques. The Kolegas also owned a Pool Hall which still fronts Highway 15 in Elma 75 Kilometres East of Winnipeg and a dance Hall. Frank smerch has owned the property for the past decade and tries to preserve it although he is in his 80s now. You can poke your head into the basement Coal bin and still see the Tunnel run at least 10 metres East before it turns and five metres West before it turns too. A person could still crawl through the tunnels but that does not seem Wise after so Many years and much ground shifting. Theress no doubt the Kolegas were engaged in smuggling particularly Home brew. People could either go there and casually buy a Small pop bottle filled with spirits or larger quantities. Mom would get All excited because dad would disappear going to have refreshments. Of the women would get angry Strelko said. In the Case of police surveillance or a raid a customer could crawl from the House to the dance Hall or vice versa. Or the customer could crawl to a Little Oil shed next to the Pool Hall where the Kolegas sold Oil and gasoline. There Are stories of a fourth passageway in the Pool Hall but smerch has never found it. You could be out of the House into the Oil shed and out onto the Street and there was nothing police could do said one Long time area resident. Kolega built a foot High Concrete Fence along much of the Tunnel with open pockets apparently to allow in air. There is still a six Inch diameter air pipe in the Yard. Even without the tunnels the House Kolega constructed is amazing. Its made almost entirely of hand mixed Concrete. The inside Walls Are overlaid with Concrete instead of plaster. Even the ceilings Are Concrete. Kolega paid kids a few pennies to collect tin cans then opened them and nailed them onto the Wood framing. He then Laid Concrete Over the tin. No one can explain this Peculiar Choice of building materials. The Pool Hall is also a Concrete fortress. An inside stairway is made of solid Concrete As if built for outside. The Pool Halls Concrete foundation is a metre wide. This place will stand for another 100 years smerch said. Even the outhouse is Concrete. It was a poor Community but the Kolegas always seemed to have More Money than other business owners Strelko said. Nobody got to know them too Well. Peter Kolega was such an unassuming Man. Very quiet. Nobody would think it she said. And very discreet. You cant get away from it. He was a Nice Man. But there was a reason for it. He did not want to ruffle feathers. Peter died in 1960, and Anna in 1966, both in the House. The family held onto ownership of the House until the Early 1980s. It has changed hands a couple of times since. Reached in Richmond b. C., Patricia Cartwright 82, one of three surviving children of Peter and Anna Kolega scoffed at the stories surrounding her mom and dad. My parents do anything like that she said. My dad was a wonderful Guy. My Mother was wonderful too. They were just the most wonderful people. Then How does she explain the tunnels what tunnels what Are you talking about she asked. Cartwright left Home to attend High school in Winnipeg in the late 1930s. Not in my parents place. There were never any tunnels. Ive never heard of such nonsense. Bill. Redekop free press. My. by David Kuxhaus Dorothy Mclay remembers the stories her grandmother Marie Louise Larivire used to Tell her As a child about Metis Leader Louis Riel. Her father and Uncle hid him from police in a Haystack recalls Mclay. He got away that time but in the end they got him. Mclay is from Kenora but her roots run deep in Manitoba and this weekend she came to Winnipeg for a reunion with More than 600 family members. They Are All descendants of Jean Baptiste and Marie Anne Nee Gaboury Lagimodiere. This summer they Are celebrating the couples arrival in the West. It was two Hundred years ago in the summer of 1806, that Marie Anne Lagimodiere left her Home in Quebec to follow her husband West becoming the first woman of european descent to live on the Prairies. Riel the Leader of the Metis and one of the fathers of Manitoba was one of their grandchildren. He was executed in 1885 after being found guilty of treason. Mclay took a guided theatrical tour yesterday of St. Boniface cemetery where Riel is buried. Sheds been there before but the retired school teacher said its always a special feeling to come Back. Its like a living history she said. Paul Lamoureux one of the organizers said people have come from As far away As Europe the u. S. And across Canada to celebrate their history. Last nights banquet was sold out. Its just been fabulous Lamoureux said. Yesterday also featured a Pancake breakfast a Parade and Tours of the St. Boniface museum and Riel House. When the Parade left Lagimodiere Park and i looked out and saw All these people i started to get tears in my eyes Lamoureux said. When you think that its All because this lady Marie Anne was willing to leave Quebec. Its estimated that some 50,000 people can Trace their lineage Back to the couple.
