As in manipulating the Media mosquitoes and Miracle Milt Stegal. The Art of manufacturing news and manipulating the Media. Our mayor who you should be reminded still a snot officially declared hers running for re election in october held a news conference this week. According to Sam katzes office it was about Progress and expected completion dates for major Road and Bridge repair and renewal projects underway in the City of Winnipeg. That requires a news conference anyway the mayor had the cameras microphones and notebooks meet him near the construction site of the Sherbrook Bridge refurbishing. Our City Hall reporter Mary Agnes Welch managed to take an interesting Angle on the non news Story by writing the merits of using fibreglass tubes instead of costly steel. But watching a to clip of the same news conference it was Clear what the mayor was up to. He was attempting to take credit for the Bridge work coming in on time and basically on budget. As far As i recall Sam Katz a snot even in office when the decision to repair the crumbling Bridge was made he had nothing to do with the near perfect construction weather and he certainly a snot been seen wearing a hard hat and carrying a lunch pail. So what was he doing there with All the Media campaigning of course. Next thing you know hell be handing out free ice Cream at City Hall. A warning from the West Nile front. Taz Stuart the Cit yes commanding officer of Mosquito wars is concerned we might be getting complacent because Mosquito counts Are Way Down this hot dry summer. Way Down. Last year on aug. 1, the traps collected 1,171 Skeeters. This aug. 1 there were 166. Thatus a drop from an average of 90 per trap to seven. City Crews Are still Larvic iding but compared to last years wet summer they re covering a Mere 58 Square Miles which is less than half of 2005 s coverage area. But Taz is still concerned. Those ankle biting West Nile carrying culex critters Are still out looking for blood. And because we think theress no problem were neglecting to take the usual precautions especially around Dawn and dusk. Consider yourself warned. Miracle you want a Miracle. Further to my mini rant about the misuse of the word Miracle. At the risk of offending my pals in the sports department Milt Stegalls catching a pass and scoring a Gam winning 100 Yard touchdown on the last play of the game a snot a Miracle. It was a defensive meltdown. Now if Milt had thrown the pass and caught it for a 100 Yard game winning touchdown. That would have been a Miracle. Go ahead blog me Milt. Gordon. Sinclair free press. My. Ca by Sean Moore fifty teachers from Canada and the United states were As Giddy As schoolchildren in a gymnasium yesterday As they watched a Monarch Caterpillar wiggle itself into forming a pupae. The teachers crowded around a milkweed Plant the monarchs Host Plant to watch a striped and plump Critter Dangle from a silk thread and begin its transition into a migrating Butterfly. The group was gathered at Brock Corydon school for a three Day seminar run by the Monarch teacher network Canada the sister Branch of the original u. S. Group that began five years ago in new Jersey. The network educates teachers on How they can use the Butterfly yes Story to teach students about mathematics ecology politics and respect for the environment. It travels to seven cities this year Winnipeg was the first Stop on the 2006 tour de Monarca and Ottawa is next. Why the Monarch its famed for a 3,000 Kilometre migration it makes to Mexico and California in the fall and Back North in the Spring. Researchers Are unsure How an insect with a brain the size of a few Salt grains can find its Way to a place it has never been but they suspect solar or perhaps magnetic Field navigation plays a part not to mention millions of years of instinct. The network has been coming to Canada for four years but this was its first time in Manitoba which added some flair to the lecture. For the first time in its history an aboriginal elder spoke about the connection humans have with butterflies. Mae Louis Campbell said her message to the teachers was simple were All related to things on Earth. And everything out there is a teacher to us including the Monarch Sean. Moore free press. My. Ca by Nick Martin a senior Manitoba Justice official promised Ray Janidean immunity from prosecution for a Saskatchewan arson and a new identity in British Columbia in december of 1990 six months before Janidean was the key witness at James risk Ellis murder trial Zani Deans lawyer David Kovnats said yesterday. The Promise came from the late Bruce Miller then Manitoba ass director of prosecutions Kovnats told the inquiry into risk Ellis wrongful conviction for the murder of Perry Dean harder. It was key it was very important in All this. Janidean indicated to me if there was no immunity there would be no testimony. He was risking his life to testify Kovnats said. But when Janidean testified against Driskell on june 11, 1991, there was still no written Deal said Kovnats. And by then Janidean was talking to the police and Crown without his lawyer Kovnats said my client was listening to others More than me at that Point. My client was dealing with them on his own without me. Driskell spent 12 years behind bars for harders murder. He always maintained innocence in the death of his Friend. Four years ago risk Ellis conviction was quashed by the Federal Justice department after Dan tests proved hairs used to convict him were not harders.
