Bundle by Jen Skerritt p Pointe Dubois emergency Crews worked frantically last night to transport 17 injured cottagers by boat from a Remote Island on the Winnipeg River system to Shore after a Tornado touched Down at Kendall Island and demolished half of the Cabins there. The three most seriously injured islanders including the owner of the islands Fly in fishing Lodge were transported on stretchers by boat to the Shore near Pointe Dubois before being taken to Hospital in Pinawa. One witness said the owner appeared to have a broken leg. Right now its difficult to Tell. So far they look like they Are doing of say Jay Ferens an emergency preparedness officer with Northeast health. Ferens said he believed another 14 less seriously injured islanders were on a Safe place on the Island or had been picked up by neighbouring boats. A total of 22 people were on the Island when the Tornado struck. Aside from the Lodge the Island had six cottages three of which were totally demolished by the storm cottage Cornie Krahn said. Shortly after 10 p. M., the first four people who were seriously Hurt reached the Dock in Pointe Dubois after a 30 minute boat ride from the Island. Emergency Crews were on the scene and transported the injured people to Hospital. Shortly after the Tornado struck Krahn emerged from his Cabin to find half of the Island destroyed and Many of his Neighbours trapped beneath the rubble. Everything was damaged. It was bad he said. Krahn pulled one of his friends from the crushed remains of a cottage. Krahn used his own boat to Rush the first four injured cottagers to Shore. Windy he said he was standing watching the sky with fellow cottagers when he saw the funnel Cloud approaching. We saw the funnel come Down and it disappeared. All of a sudden it just started getting Windy and we ran for the cottage he said. By 11 p. M., three ambulance and paramedic Crews ramp and crowds of people lined the Shore at Pointe Dubois waiting for More boats to arrive from the Island. Meanwhile in Lac Dubonnet ramp were still searching for possible missing boaters As darkness fell last night after the Tornado ripped through the popular cottage area. The storm caught boaters by Surprise and at least two crafts were still thought to be missing. By 9 p. M., a helicopter was searching the area. Early reports suggested numerous people were injured at Kendall Point Lodge near Pointe Dubois on the Winnipeg River system.
