Winnipeg free press sunday August 6, 2006 Manitoba a7 Rose Isle gallery rises again on hippie legend
r Ose Isle ? what a this the epicentre of the hippie experience the children of the 70s? who landed Here in search of an alter native lifestyle embracing their hip pie a marketing tool yes if that hippie culture can boost tourist traffic says Karen Adamson owner of a new Craft gallery Here 90 Kilometres West of Winnipeg. Adamson Hopes to fill the void left by the closure of the St. Lupinin gallery. Its kind of a joke around Here about the hippies. But its like Ogo Pogo or the Loch Ness monster. We need the legend Adamson said. A Mon Down. Its a switch. In 1998, outspoken area resident Bill Harrison in a letter to the editor blistered a former free press reporter for using what he considered antiquated terms like hippies and Flower Harrison said the article would bring unwanted curiosity seekers to the area. Please i respectfully ask your newspaper to quit with the Back to the country life cliche articles particularly when it comes to our Neighbour Hood Harrison wrote. Time heals what reason cannot i Hope gulp. Not Many businesses that came out of the hippie Era have survived. There a music store electric fetus in Minneapolis a former head shop from the 1970s that seems to succeed in spite of itself. The incense is always burning when customers browse among its hash pipes and widely acclaimed selection of roots music. The St. Lupinin gallery in Central Manitoba was also a kind of counter culture statement an arts and crafts store placed in the Middle of nowhere ? a ghost town called St. Lupinin. The gallery operated for nearly 25 years an astonishing record consider ing How quickly Craft stores come and go. Near Rose Isle and reached by gravel Road it had a famous Finger Post sign out front pointing to far Flung locales from Oslo to new York to Paris. But the gallery closed when owner Ken Chambers died of a heart attack three years ago. The area was left without an outlet for artistic expression Adamson said. Her gallery is More homage to the St. Lupinin gallery than a replace ment she said. It can to be replaced. It really was one of the Best galleries. It sold so much the new gallery is in the vacated Campbells general store built More than a Century ago. The store still has the original stamped tin ceiling old counters with giant drawers for keeping Rice and cereals and the original red lunch counter stools. It still has the old Buzzer that building owner Garth Campbells father used to press to ring his wife at Home when he needed help. Adamson Hopes visitors will Park themselves on the stools and discuss Art the weather whatever. For me the gallery is an important social thing. To just make Art and Box it and sell it in tas the gallery is Only open saturday and sunday noon to 5 p.m., from May to the end of september. This is How Ken ran his gallery Adamson said. It is opposite the new Rose Isle Coop store. The gallery includes artists from both the area and Winnipeg like Glass artist Ione Thorkelsson maker of the Manitoba film Industry a blizzard awards Metal sculptor Candace Milletaire Kirk Creed Doug Skelton and Adamson. Adamson has sculpted farm animals with iconic designs. I wanted to bring Back an attitude people have lost of spiritual connection to the animals we depend on for food she said. The Snow Valley Region sometimes called pumpkin Creek with its rolling terrain provides Lovely and interest ing scenery. I think a lot of people like to do Day trips. The area surprises a lot of people for its valleys and creeks Adamson said. Harper should not be tinkering with your pension
o Ottawa ? a summer Long weekend is the perfect time to Muse about your retirement years to Pine for a time when you no longer have to worry about punching the time clock. As you crack open another cold one you May want to con Sider an idea straight out of right Field that prime minister Stephen Harper has for the source of your pension Cheque. At one level the tory pitch first unveiled in May a budget and then barely heard of since sounds so reason Able its hard not to be seduced by it. Remember those big budget surpluses the liberals used to run up Well Harper thinks he has a better idea for what to do with any extra Cash after the first $3 billion of surplus is used to pay Down the debt. He wants to share it with the Canada pension plan and Quebec pension plan. First the extra Cash would help strengthen the pillar of the country a retirement income system which unlike most others in the industrialized world actually has its act together. Second it would improve inter Gen rational that a a fancy phrase to address the Way younger workers Are getting a raw Deal by having to dig deeper into their pockets to pay for the same benefits that flowed to those who retired before them. For instance a Canadian born in 1990 will earn a real rate of return of 2.1 per cent on cup investment com pared to a return of 6.2 per cent for someone born in 1940. Finally lowering the contribution Burden on the next generation of work ers would supposedly help increase the competitiveness of the Canadian Economy. This would allow the unplanned sur pluses to be used for the future Benefit of canadians is How the tories trumpeted their pension plan in the budget. So what a wrong with Ottawa putting Money toward your retirement Well Here a the thing. Ottawa has never had anything directly to do with the cup App other than helping administer it jointly with the provinces. Your cup Cheque is something funded by you and your employer. Ottawa is responsible for making sure the plan is working but it does to put a cent into the Pool of retirement Cash As a matter of principle. So what we Are talking about Here is a new precedent and one that might be problematic Well beyond the fact Mak ing this thing Fly would require not Only Federal legislation but also the agreement of the bulk of provinces. Should Ottawa be putting its Finger into a plan that will be on sustainable footing for at least the next 75 years what happens if Ottawa a estimate of that excess surplus is wrong could the Federal government demand some of that Money Back what if the country hit hard times might the feds argue that they had a claim on their past contributions think of the games the Federal liberals played with employment insurance Cash and Start to shudder. And does a Federal contribution give Ottawa the right to say where the Money is invested could a group of Saskatchewan maps argue that Federal pension Money should go to a project within their province even if it want the Best instrument for your retirement future aside from giving actuaries fits now that would be kind of fun would it it you have to ask Why a prime minister who fashions himself As a bit of a free Enterprise wants to Intro Duce government into something that is working without government. If Harper retires his pension propos Al he could easily put any and All sur prise surplus Cash toward the debt which used to be what tories argued was the Best Way to deliver Long term benefits to canadians. Or if Harper wanted to help the next generations of workers he could flow the Cash to the provinces to help them train future cup contributors. Paul Samyn is the free press National reporter.
