an organizer of annual cancer event asks what More can i do t his year Over 800 women in Manitoba will be diagnosed with breast cancer and sadly 200 women fighting the disease will Suc Cumb. But the killer disease does not just affect women. Lisa Todd was just 10 years old when her father fought and survived breast cancer. And although she does Bremem Ber much about his Battle she does recall How it changed her fam Ilys Way of life. I Don to think i understood it she said remembering the daily bus trips to the Hospi Tal she made with her Mother. It just want today the Cibic employee is work ing to educate the Public about breast cancer and to make life easier for women and men who Are in the fight for their lives. Although most women Are aware of prevention and detection Steps to be taken she said Many people Are still surprised to learn that men can also develop the disease. Along with fellow employee Sherri Lynne Beekenkamp Todd sits on the organizing committee of the Cibic run for the cure an emotional one and five Kilometre walk event that last year boasted Over 7,500 participants and raised Over $800,000 for the Canadian breast cancer foundation. In addition to planning All logistical aspects of the october 1st event the committed pair also coordinates Cibos team of Over 350 fundraising walkers. Every year it moves you More and More and More to want to do More and More and More said Todd who has participated in the event for the past 10 years the past three of those As a committee member. She said that the Day of the event is an overwhelming and emotional experience. Many participants walk in memory of lost loved ones or in honour of friends and family members still battling the disease but Many breast can cer survivors and even those still in treatment also take part identified in special Pink to shirts. Bandanas on race Day you see people walking around who Are still in chemo wearing their bandanas. Its powerful. It makes you want to do More what else can i do How else can i do it although she and Beekenkamp Origi Nally became involved with the run for the cure through their place of employment ? Cibic is the title Spon Sor of the National event ? it has become much More than a work commitment. Todd estimates that last year they each donated nearly 400 hours of their personal time to making the event a Success a commitment they expect will be even greater by the time everything is Complete this year. Beekenkamp who met her husband while volunteering for the event adds that each year its a fun Challenge to get More and More people involved raising even More Money. Its a great message to share with our employees and get everybody on Side with it said Beekenkamp of the reason for their perseverance and dedication. Todd adds that in addition to their co workers who have rallied around their cause their families have also recognized their passion and come on Board As helpers and participants.
