one year later
new Orleans is still in pieces
by Natalie Pompilio the Philadelphia inquirer n new Orleans ? one year later this City is still haunted. Hurricane katrina a winds and Rains Are Long gone. Her floodwaters have receded. Most of her dead Are buried.
but her ghosts Are Here. You see them in Block after Block of empty Homes shuttered strip malls and piles of curbside trash remnants of lives that can never be reclaimed. You see them in the faces of residents. They Are tired scarred from Battles they never asked for suspended in disbelief. How they wonder could so much time have passed with so Little being done because i a a former new Orleans resident i was sent Here before katrina hit and worked in the City for weeks afterwards chronicling what i thought were some of the worst things i could Ever see. Yet i still can to believe what i a seeing now. I be returned to new Orleans about half a dozen times since the storm. Before each return someone has asked is stuff still going on Down there because they think its Over. They re tired of Reading about it. People who live in the storms path Are sick of katrina too ? except they can to escape. Its not just the physical signs of devastation although its hard to discount mile after mile of flood damaged Homes Homes that now sit dark. Nor is it the altered landscape. Exotic new Orleans is no longer As Lush and Beautiful As it once was. What plagues people is the mental anguish. Some people have gone katrina that a what my friends and i Call it when you crack when you just can to take it anymore. The endless Calls to insurance Compa Nies and government agencies the misery of driving Miles past closed stores and businesses to find one that has reopened the silence in a City known for its music and Joy. And there a the unknown. What happened to this Neighbour where did that one go the usual support networks ? friends co workers fellow parishioners even family members ? Are broken. Some have disappeared their names not appearing on any katrina lists. I know a handful of people like that people for whom i have combed the internet to no Avail. Continued please see katrina b4
