Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - August 27, 2006, Winnipeg, Manitoba a4 Winnipeg free press sunday August 27, 2006 Manitoba lets agree to be tolerant in Faith debate j Anet Baldwin and Domino Wilkins want to make it perfectly Clear they Are treating one another with professional respect. In a joint letter to the editor published in yester Days free press Baldwin who is chairwoman of the Manitoba human rights commission and Wilkins superintendent of the Garden Valley school division say they have a cordial working relationship. They May be the Only people keeping an open mind As debate rages Over whether Winkler a schools violated the provinces human rights code by con ducting religious exercises during school hours. There a nothing like Rais ing the name of the lord to cause some people to behave in a Way that suggests they skipped sunday school the Day Mark 12 39 was covered. Here a a hint love thy. ? there has been a flurry of letters to this paper chatter on talk radio and gossip around the water cooler on this topic. The debate has been fierce per Sonal and lacking in the Temperance some people Are still foolish enough to ascribe to Public discussions of Faith. Much of the Nitter Natter misses two key facts. First the Issue has already been decided. If you want religion taught in your child a school you can enrol her in a private institution. Sec Ond christians Don to represent the Only Faith in this province nor do we have a monopoly on values. Those facts have been Well represented in the debate. Accepting one another is crucial for child development. Should we not teach our children to respect others and what they believe one woman wrote. Why is it that schools support the teaching of a variety of religions except for christianity Winkler and other Southern Manitoba towns who support Christian beliefs in the schools have shown great potential for the future leaders of tomorrow. We must create critical thinkers who have a Strong foundation to build if we Are teaching critical thinkers if we want to encourage children to accept each another we should to be praying to a specific and exclusive god before classes begin each Day. Its hubris to assume a single prayer reflects the True Faith of every Community member. Its simply dangerous to believe Only one Faith has a Home in any Community no matter How devout that Community May be. I think that if All the parents agree that this is what they would like their children to participate in then it is a non Issue wrote another free press Reader. That a a big id hate to be the one family who objected who openly said they a pre Fer to Pray at Home to express their Faith in a myriad of other ways or to not practise religion. How difficult would life be for their child for their work lives or for their standing in the Community if they dared to object our country has been built on Strong Christian values wrote another Reader. I feel that today we put too much emphasis on rights and not enough on responsibilities. Christian values emphasize Charity tolerance and peace values which we seem to have Good and moral people dedicate themselves to those values regardless of their Faith. Our country was built by people who worked hard cared for one another and dedicated themselves to their Community. There is no argument that Many of those people like my ancestors had Strong Christian beliefs. But we weren to the Only ones build ing the nation ? and we Are not the Only ones today dedicated to preserve altercations leave two men in Hospital police Are investigating a pair of Seri the Man was still in critical Condi she said the victim had surgery yes about 4 30 .
