By Ian Hitchen and Matt Goerzen d River arrogance and carelessness not the Lack of a twinned Roadway have been cited As the main causes of a string of accidents on the Yellowhead Highway by the head of the Shoal Lake ramp detachment. There seems to be this invincibility atmosphere out there that ism of its everybody else a ramp staff sgt. Helmut Neufeld said. Well no. Its us its me. The Highway Isnit dangerous. Its the people using that Highway that Arentt careful. There have been three deadly vehicle incidents and four fatalities along Highway 16 Between Shoal Lake and the Saskatchewan Border since aug. 12, and All of them involved human error. The first incident involved two men from Russell who ramp say were travelling too fast for the Road on their Way Home. Both men died when they lost control of their truck and trailer and rolled. In another incident a woman from Souris died when she pulled out in front of a Semi truck. And ramp say the cause of death of a Winnipeg woman who hit the gravel shoulder and rolled could be anything from falling asleep to a medical problem. Neufeld said blaming police because we dont do enough patrolling really does not show an understanding of the situation. None of these have anything to do with being on the Highway there. Whether you patrol past the Stop sign 30 seconds before the Accident its not going to Stop people from going through the Stop sign if we dont happen to be sitting there. Drivers seem to be making Many More errors recently he said. If ism in my off duty vehicle i see Stop sign infractions All the time. Some people dont Stop at Highway 16. They just blow right through right across. Much of Highway 16 is limited to single Lane traffic although there have been Calls in the past to twin the Highway. But Neufeld said single Lane traffic had no part in these recent accidents. Brandon Sun a6 Winnipeg repress.
