Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - August 28, 2006, Winnipeg, Manitoba Leave Tom and Jerry alone re Tom and Jerry have to butt out thatus just too much aug. 23. I agree with Lindor Reynolds about How silly it is to change the older cartoons to be More politically Correct with regards to smoking. I too am against smoking but this is going too far. What next modify every Humphrey Bogart movie Robert Newman Winnipeg look at Chiles example lately there have been frequent letters and comments in the free press about the Canadian first nations. One letter to the editor first nations Arentt nations aug. 24 explained Why they do not qualify As a nation according to International Law. I would like to Point out that in Chile the aboriginals called Mapu Ches or people of the land were fighting the colonial Spanish and later the forces of the Republic of Chile for centuries. Finally the Mapu Ches began the gradual process of integrating into the new society if you cant beat them join them. Mapu Ches Are going to school farming and working like the rest of the population. Recently a delegation of Mapu Ches came to Winnipeg and visited a number of facilities and first nations groups. Their Only question was Why the Canadian aboriginals they met preferred to take a Federal Cheque instead of taking jobs. Francisco Valenzuela Winnipeg change lanes when passing just a note to the woman who wrote in to the paper regarding her $ 50 u. S. Fine in North Dakota recently careful on n. D. Highways aug. 24. If you take into consideration that the posted Speed limit in North Dakota on the i 29 is 75 Miles per hour one would think that common sense would prevail when you see a vehicle parked on the shoulder. Common sense tells you to move Over into the other Lane or slow Down if changing lanes is not possible. One would think that this would be especially obvious if that vehicle on the Side of the Road was a police car. I do believe that if this sheriff who pulled this above mentioned lady Over was her brother son or husband she would want other Drivers to use their common sense and change lanes also. Allison Friesen Niverville a Amaros return a bad sign re Oshawa to build updated Camaro aug. 22. It is disheartening to learn that general motors is reviving the Camaro muscle car in a futile attempt to improve their year end standing. I find it ironic that general motors looks to the past for solutions to its ailing Ledger while Toyota and Honda look toward a brighter sustainable future in the development of hybrid vehicles. When will Ford pm and Chrysler learn that the Camaro the Hummer and other Gas guzzling dinosaurs have no place in a sustainable future. Toyota and Honda continue to show record profits year after year while the big three struggle to balance their books. Michael Bennett Winnipeg they re propaganda videos i am responding to Bob Bergens column our troops at War aug. 24. Bergen asserts that the images uploaded to youtube. Com Are raw unedited that these videos should be required viewing for generations of canadians. However what you find on the website Are propaganda videos nothing More nothing less. By definition the film is edited there Are several cuts omissions and rearrangements. Even Bergen admits that military censorship has affected them. So what do we see we see a Canadian Soldier silhouetted against a Bright sky firing from the hip. We see men throwing grenades into buildings running for cover. What we do not get though is any sort of context to accompany a few visceral images of explosions gunfire and a fair amount of cussing. The Only difference Between these images and the ones on the 6 Oclock news is that these Are slightly longer. Gone Are the casualties. Gone is the blood. Are we to assume that War is boisterous and bloodless War has always been accompanied by propaganda but we should not pretend that these videos filmed by an embedded journalist censored by himself and our own military cannot be anything but propaganda. Zachary Rothman Winnipeg an unusual performance re Chicks stick to music aug. 20. Ive been attending concerts for 30 years now. Clearly Melissa Martin has not. The reasons i suspect this Start with her reference to the introductory music for the Dixie Chicks. She referred to it As a bombastic american bandstand March. While that is True it was specifically Hail to the chief. The irony would not have been lost on someone Over the age of 25. Also the scruffy guitarist vocalist Schneider is not of the same name As the scruffy older Singer songwriter of Canadian Fame. The Canadian is Bob Snider not Schneider. I saw something in Bob schneiders performance that Ive never seen unbelievable interplay with the audience. In fact it was such an unusual performance for an opening act that were it not for the Friendship Between Schneider and the Chicks it might have led to the artist being kicked off the tour for being too Good. Dave Ferguson Winnipeg a trip of a lifetime Isnit it just marvellous go on a free junket to Lebanon organized by the National Council on Canada Arab relations. In a few Days you will be Able to give advice to the world at Large on who should or should not be called a terrorist. As an additional Bonus you will be visiting such Freedom Loving democracies As Syria and Egypt. Morley m. Globerman Winnipeg did Bush know in Advance re was Bush Engineer of 911 onslaught aug. 21. The possibility of whether u. S. President George w. Bush was the Engineer behind the 9/ 11 attacks is provocative but impossible. However there is definitely the possibility and probability that Bush and his entourage especially vice president Dick Cheney and defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld saw the dots and made the connections of the inevitable and imminent catastrophe. This scenario of intentional ignorance is similar to the infamous British Coventry incident of the second world War. The Bush administration decided on this terrible and horrible course because they wanted and obtained the Gale animation of the american Public for their pre determined unjust and illegal War on Iraq. Eng see Cheam Winnipeg hurry up and wait t he United nations was quite anxious to persuade Israel to withdraw from the Southern Lebanon. A month Long War Between the israelis and the Hezbollah terrorists who have effectively controlled that part of Lebanon since the israelis withdrew their occupation forces several years ago had claimed More than 1,000 lives on both sides of the Border and threatened to spread through the Region. That at least is what the unclaimed in demanding that Israel pull Back. The suspicion lingers however that it was the damage that the israeli defence Force was inflicting on Hezbollah that was at least As great a determining Factor in in policy. Statements from Secretary general Kofi Annan and other in officials tended to pass Over Hezbollah has invasion of Israel its kidnapping of two israeli soldiers and its concerted Campaign of rocket attacks against israeli civilians. That suspicion is reinforced by the fact that the International body is not nearly As anxious to get its own troops into Lebanon As it was eager to get the israelis out. The Deal on withdrawal that the United states and France sold to the israeli government was that a Force of 15,000 soldiers would assist the lebanese army in separating the two combatants in the Border area and also disarm Hezbollah to prevent further terrorist attacks. But that agreement has changed and in changing has become less of an Opportunity for a legitimate ceasefire and a More of respite that allows Hezbollah to rearm and regroup. That rearming is made easier because the lebanese Border with Syria through which iranian arms Are funnelled to Hezbollah remains open. The in has no plan to patrol it on the contrary it has demanded that Israel end its naval blockade of lebanese ports through which arms Are also shipped although the lebanese army is not yet in position to police them. Israel has refused until the ports Are secure. Although the ceasefire was proclaimed on aug. 14, it was 10 Days later that the in Force started to take shape with the belated commitment last week by France which was expected to be in charge of 2,000 troops and promises from other europeans of another 4,000. That is at least a beginning albeit a slow one or. Annan says that it will take up to three months to deploy the Force leaving a handful of in and lebanese soldiers to keep the peace until then. More seriously there remains no provision to disarm Hezbollah although the terms of the ceasefire require that As does in Resolution 1559. The French and the other europeans have refused to undertake that responsibility and the lebanese army has proven that it is either unwilling or unable or both when it comes to controlling Hezbollah. The continued presence of a Large terrorist army in Lebanon leaves Little Hope of a lasting truce Only of a Lull in the fighting. Oly wests end run oly West is seeking to make an end run on opponents of its plan to build a hog slaughtering and processing Plant in St. Boniface. End runs Are usually considered unsporting but not in this Case. Almost from the beginning one of the main objections to the construction of the Plant in the St. Boniface Industrial Park was the Prospect that trucks carrying millions of pigs to Slaughter would be using the same roadways As other Park tenants including the makers of generic drugs. Such trucks Are not the most hygienic the pigs they transport defecate in them. Some of that waste can Slop onto roads and All of it creates odour. The Prospect of trucks lining the streets of the Park oozing waste and stink is without doubt objectionable. Oly West however has confirmed that it is negotiating to build a $ 1.5 million Access Road to its site from the South and so avoid having to move pigs through the Park to its North. Why this obvious improvement in the site plan was not obvious from the beginning is unclear but it probably says something about the haste with which initial planning was undertaken in order for the City and provincial governments to be Able to declare a done Deal before the Public got wind of it. That said Access from the South appears to address one of the main complaints from other Park tenants. It does not however resolve the issues of whether pig stuff should be oozing from trucks on roads North or South or anywhere else for that matter. Nor does it mean that odour Levels will be acceptable. Those Are issues for the clean environment commission to address in months ahead. Some oly West opponents Are said to be dismayed that the Road plan might be the cause of some erosion in resolve to Block the Plant. And perhaps it did or will. But surely there can be nothing wrong with oly West seeking ways to satisfy complaints. And just As surely there Are a lot More issues to be studied in detail before the Cec than whether Access to the site is from the North or South. Whats immediately before everyone involved is a determination of the adequacy of the science involved in slaughtering rendering and processing millions of hogs on a daily basis at a site in St. Boniface. If that finding is that the Plant can safely operate there and if that finding continues to cause dismay then the Issue will become political. But it is too Early to be counting yeas or nays or to be dismayed by the result. Andrew s. The Appeal for funding of the Augusta Victoria Hospital in Jerusalem has now increased to 3.2 million u. S. Dollars. This is based on there being no end in sight of the embargo regarding Hamas.
