Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - August 30, 2006, Winnipeg, Manitoba Unfair to Canadas natives re look at Chiles example aug. 28. It makes me wonder where the delegation of Mapu Ches were taken when they came to visit Winnipeg and various first nation groups. Of course there Are unemployed aboriginals. Myself and almost All of my aboriginal family and friends Are All employed or Are in some Type of education or training and some Are not government sponsored. Ism tired of disparaging Blanket statements like this. Why we rent they taken to positive places such As one of the University aboriginal student centres for example. I think that its great that it sounds like the Mapu Ches Are doing great in their own country but now they Are going to leave Here thinking that the Canadian aboriginals All prefer to take a Federal Cheque instead of taking a Job. This is definitely not the Case Joanne Nee pin Winnipeg Mauche Are persecuted this colonization of nations is based on racial and cultural superiority. No colonizing nation can escape this historical fact hence these nations inherited a colonizing mentality. Chilean society inherited the colonizing mentality of the spaniards. Therefore the entire chilean society is racist against the aboriginal people of Chile. The Fate of the Mauche people has not been different from any other aboriginal people around the Globe. Today in Chile we have Many Mauche people behind bars persecuted by the state under the terrorist Law passed during the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. The Only reason that these Mauche leaders Are in jails is because they fought to recuperate the land that once belonged to their ancestors. The aboriginal people of Canada suffered the same atrocities As did the Mauche. The Canadian state has an obligation to compensate them for the cultural genocide that the English and French impinged upon them. Jaime Carrasco Winnipeg Little room for sympathy re workers reject Tembeck offer aug. 26. I find it very difficult to sympathize with the threat of strike. The mayor of Pine Falls Power View states that a strike would have losses on both sides and would affect not Only his town but also the surrounding communities. Where is the mention of any effect towards the aboriginal communities could it be that there is no effect on the first nations that surround this Mill because Tembeck has skirted the Issue of aboriginal employment Tembeck and its owners will no doubt claim to have a fair percentage of aboriginal employees but one would have to ask is that percentage for Short term seasonal employment sadly the full time year round aboriginal employees at the Mill Are few and far Between especially from the first nation situated right at the front door of Tembeck. Lori Sinclair Winnipeg Cirque Dusoleil Superb re what a trip aug. 27. We attended the Cirque Dusoleil performance on Friday night and absolutely loved it. The acrobats gymnasts dancers and musicians were All highly skilled and there was great creativity in the whole presentation. The music and the projection of images on the curtain screens added to the whole experience. Everyone around us expressed Awe and wonder As Well. The performance was unlike anything we had Ever seen a wonderful piece of theatre performance Art. It was a great Surprise then to read Kevin pro Koshys ultimately unsatisfactory review in the sunday free press. Cirque Dusoleil was a five Star performance no question. Wilma Schroeder & Mark Routley Winnipeg headline Choice questioned regarding the headline delirium tremendous in the life & arts Section on aug. 24 either your copy editors were asleep at the switch or someone has purposely made a cute play on delirium Kremens in that headline. Ism not sure which is worse. The effects of withdrawal from alcohol addiction Are not in my opinion something to joke about in a headline about a circus. Perhaps i am being Overly sensitive but would someone please explain to me the thinking behind this headline Frank Cormier Winnipeg dont be fooled by scams re woman duped in scam by alleged vacation firm aug. 28. I find it hard to believe that there Are still people who Are fooled by Telephone scams. It is probably Safe to say that there is no travel agent in the world that has the authorization to investigate a stolen credit card. These scams will not Stop As Long As people continue to give out sensitive information to total strangers Over the internet or their Telephone. David Pelletier Winnipeg Job opportunities missed re Call Centre rings up jobs aug. 25 Job creation statistics definitely support the premise that the customer Contact Centre Industry is one of the fastest growing industries in Canada. However today it is definitely not a growing sector let alone one of the fastest growing sectors in Manitoba. Manitoba new Brunswick and Nova Scotia had 12,000, 10,500 and 8,000 Contact Centre jobs in 2001. As of june 30, Manitoba new Brunswick and Nova Scotia reported 12,000, 20,000 and 15,500 jobs respectively. The Story of lost potential for Manitoba does not end there. If Manitoba had just kept Pace with the growth of lowly new Brunswick our Economy would enjoy an additional $ 280 million in annual payrolls. Steve Demmings Winnipeg ribbons Are for our troops re theress a Stealthy message behind ribbons aug. 26. As i sit and read your comments on the support our troops ribbons and your Outlook on what they mean i think of what they mean to me. They mean that my son and All the other soldiers Over in Afghanistan know that they Are in the thoughts and hearts of the people at Home. We As parents and All family members feel this is a Way of letting people know that we love and care about them As they Are fighting Over there. Is it for Afghanistan or America who knows All we know is that we Are supporting our troops As they give up time with their families to try to keep terrorism from coming into our Homes and lives. If it is wrong to show our support so be it. We also Wear red on fridays As a show of support in Hope that it Isnit their blood that is spilled Over there. Please do not think that because we show a yellow ribbon and Wear red on fridays that we Are supporting anything but our men and women. And we Hope and Pray that they All come Home Safe. Lois & George Collen Minnedosa transplant Patchwork t he Good news for Manitoban who Are morbidly ill with kidney disease is that it does not matter where in the province they live they have an equal Chance of getting a transplant. The bad news As the Canadian medical association journal spelled out this week is that the 110 Manitoban waiting for a kidney have a much worse Chance than Many other canadians at getting a transplant. Canada does not have a National transplant system and Manitoba has had one of the worst rates of Organ donation in the country. Health care is provincially administered and primarily provincially funded so each province has established its own program to educate citizens and health care workers about Organ donations and to set up waiting lists for recipients. There is co operation nationally on sharing what works to boost donations but there is no movement to set up a Canada wide Organ wait list. A study reported this week in the Cmaj showed that there is wide variation among the provinces in How Many transplants were done and How quickly needy patients got them. Manitoba Ontario and British Columbia fared far poorer than the rest of the country. In 2002, Ontario and Manitoba had transplantation rates of 2.6 and 2.4 per 100 patient years while Alberta sat at 8.9. The median predicted waiting time was just More than three years in Alberta but close to eight years in Ontario and b. C. In Manitoba there is a mean waiting time of 4.3 years according to the provincial program. Manitoba used to be ahead of the rest when it came to kidney donation rates 24 donations per million people in 1994. Since 2000, donations have dropped substantially. In 2004, Manitoba did seven kidney transplants from deceased donors and six last year. But renewed Effort and the hiring of More transplant coordinators began to turn around the numbers to Date this year there have been 12 such transplants and the number of transplants from living donors has risen too. There is a lot of work yet to be done to educate the Public opinion polls show that while 90 per cent of those surveyed support Organ donations Only about half actually signed the Wallet sized donor cards that accompany Drivers licence renewal forms. Unlike the United states and european countries Canada does not have a National Organ donation system. That is a shame. With demand outstripping Supply harvesting and transplanting kidneys will remain a provincial Pursuit certainly As Long As the disparity in the donation rates across provinces is so pronounced. Manitoba with its High rate of diabetes has a serious Challenge to meet but history shows this province can meet it. That will require a sustained Public education Campaign. Manitoban have to make known to their loved ones or on the donor cards what they want done with their organs when they no longer need them. Nasal Lahs regret As acts of contrition go Hezbollah Leader Hassan nasal Lahs expression of regret this week for the War Between his militia and Isreal was almost comic. Had we known that the capture of soldiers would have led to this we definitely would not have done it he said. By which he wants the lebanese who suffered 1,300 dead in the War he started to conclude what that everyone should understand that invading Israel to kill three soldiers and Kidnap two More is Mere play and that retaliation is not Cricket that he is Only human he made a mistake not in killing and kidnapping soldiers but in thinking that no one would care very much that blame for the War should not fall on his head because Heck he meant Well this latter conclusion is Likely nearest to his intent and As cockeyed As it surely is it represents a Glimmer of Hope. Now that the smoke has cleared from War now that the lebanese have had a Chance to take Stock the mood in Lebanon is reported to be changing from cowed acceptance of a foreign controlled and armed thug to outrage Over what that thug has wrought. While or. Nasrallah might think the lebanese and the rest of the world Are fool enough to accept his regret is of an inadvertent War and not that it Cost him support he is clearly not so foolish As to ignore that his Host is signalling the party is Over that its time for the guests to leave. Its not much but the Prospect that Hezbollah might be reigned in that it might not be Able to strut with armed impunity could help the lebanese find their courage and Force it to disarm. Encouraging too were reports yesterday that a former Hamas newspaper editor wrote that palestinians in Gaza have been infected by the bacteria of stupidity As evidenced by their willingness to blame Israel for their problems and to accept life under the Yoke of anarchy and the swords of thugs. Ghazi Hamad did not name names but he advised armed groups in Gaza to have mercy on us from your demagogy chaos guns thugs infighting. Let Gaza breathe a bit. Let it live. Two voices one of a terrorist fearful of Public Defiance the other of a writer encouraging it Are Small signs of Hope. The coincidence that they were raised on the same Day sunday might encourage the fantasies of conspiracy theorists but More hopefully it might encourage the fantasies of lebanese and palestinian people who want change for the better. Bravo to Jean Palmer for writing about the problem of cyclists on Winnipeg sidewalks. I have been living and working in downtown Winnipeg for the past 10 years. I dont own a car and i walk everywhere. Walking in Winnipeg used to be a pleasure but not any More. Sidewalk cyclists have increased dramatically in the last few years and the situation is becoming very dangerous. Ive been knocked Down twice and have witnessed Many other collisions. After complaining to my City councillor for the past four years still nothing has been done. Is the City waiting for someone to get seriously Hurt before addressing this problem lets put up signs indicating that cycling on sidewalks is against the Law. We have signs for skateboarders Why not for cyclists lets give the Biz patrols the authority to Issue traffic violations to these sidewalk cyclists. And lets put in some Bike paths at least on the major arteries even if they Are temporary for the summer season so both pedestrians and cyclists can be Safe.
