readers sound off on Highway neglect
o n monday the free press published a list of Manitoba a worst highways according to the Manitoba truckers association Caa Manitoba and the Manitoba heavy construction association. We also asked readers to pipe in with suggestions of their own. But instead of just hearing Highway Hor ror stories we also received some interesting observations. Here a a smattering of the Reader feedback i hardly know where to begin most of our roads Are embarrassing. This Winter a lot of rvs lost control and hit the ditch trying to drive South for the Winter on Highway 75. I wonder what the final tally was As i know of at least three. Highway 1 is embarrassing too As it should All have been divided Many years ago. Saskatchewan is putting us to shame the nip government is just interested in the Northern roads As that is where they get the ? Carol Gerbrandt Winnipeg the Road from Thompson to Lynn Lake provincial Road 391 is worse than roads in some War torn regions ? half gravel and half paved. I witnessed a car flip Over two times after driving just a Little too far into the gravel shoulder. This might be in better shape than when i lived there in 2000, but the to shirt slogan i survived the Road to Lynn Lake tells the Story better than i could ? Andrew Dempsey Winnipeg Highway 10 in the town of Swan River is under the jurisdiction of the province and is a disgrace. It is full of potholes its pavement is breaking up and it has patches Over patches. Highway 83 from Highway 4 to approximately 12 Miles North of Roblin has numerous pavement Breaks and patches have been put Over previous patches. There have to be at least 10 areas where highways workers have placed caution signs to warn motorists of pavement Breaks. Also at certain times of the year trucks of certain weight cannot use Highway 83 to get to Swan River they must travel from Roblin to Ashville Junction and up Highway 10, adding an additional 120 Kilometres to the ? Glen Mckenzie mayor town of Swan River All governments federally and provincially have shown nothing but Gross incompetence in the upgrading of our highways. It seems As if they All got trapped in some sort of time Warp where they still think the motor vehicle traffic on our roads compares to the 1960s we Are now in the new millennium and Road traffic has multiplied enormously especially the use of our roads by the trucking Industry to deliver everyday supplies the infrastructure of our province and nation should not have been blatantly ignored the Way they have been Over the past three decades. While i know traffic fatalities can happen anywhere i Only travel to the United states now on the safety of their modern ? Ted Arich teff Winnipeg Highway 2 should be closed from Oak Bluff to Elm Creek. We used to travel that Way but after wrecking the front end we now go the Long Way around on no. 1.? ? Lloyd Wright in conversation with a Long haul truck Driver who was complaining about Manitoban and Canadian roads i asked Why he did to travel to Toronto via the . His response was stunning. He pointed out that . Roads were built better and they want to keep them that Way. They have a Load limit of 80,000 lbs., while in Canada 100,000 lbs. Are allowed. His truck pulls the maximum allowed always. Few roads if any in Manitoba Are built to withstand the loads that Are being allowed on
