I had legitimate journalistic reasons for attending this big Charity gala which pitted 10 of Manitoba Stop chefs against one another in a culinary Challenge to raise funds for Canadas olympic athletes. As a crusading journalist who does not understand the meaning of the word cholesterol i Felt obligated to stuff myself with enough gourmet cuisine to put a rogue elephant into a Pate induced coma. Plus the food was free. Also the wine. As you have no doubt deduced i am a huge supporter of the olympic movement. My editor Felt it was important for me to attend this gastronomical showdown which paired chefs with local olympians in Case any professionally humorous events suddenly broke out. When i arrived the air was thick with tension and the smell of Competition although that might just have been the foie gras Burger with lobster Fries. I made a beeline for a huge table where the chef from the velvet Glove was dishing up samples of Arctic Char some thing or other with a Side dish of beets which i believe to be some manner of Root As i stood eyeballing the food a pair of familiar voices shocked me out of my reverie. Hey Doug they roared have you set anything on fire yet a a a a these voices belonged to two very Lovely and extremely amusing female colleagues. They were referring to a gala dinner i attended last weekend the highlight of which came when someone other than me set our table on fire by cleverly placing the bread Basket on top of a Candle. A a a i replied attempting to appear both elegant and charming. No i Haven to done anything stupid. Yet mind you when i made that remark i had not yet attempted the Complex task of picking up a Fork. What you need to know Here is that each table had a huge Basket containing approximately 3,000 Forks. As my colleagues looked on i grabbed a Fork. As it turns out it was an extremely important Fork in the sense that it through some Basic Law of physics was keeping All the other Forks from falling out of the Basket. When i removed that particular Fork the other Forks one after another began raining Down on the floor in a continuous and extremely loud Cascade of silverware. A Ching a Ching a Ching went the Forks several Hundred of which were by now bouncing around at my feet. As a trained Humour columnist i looked around in a confused manner and said huh because i did to have a clue what was happening. Fortunately my kind hearted colleagues acted in a Swift and compassionate manner. Ohm gawd look at him a a a they cackled As a crowd gathered to Check out the ruckus. This of course helped a great Deal. But the situation was soon brought under control by the chef who clutching the largest Butcher knife i have Ever seen marched around the table and roasted me with his eyes. Then using special skills Learned from Long years in the Kitchen he deftly plugged the Hole in the Basket. Next just when i thought he was ready to Julienne my Fin Gers the fiery eyed chef casually kicked the impressive Mound of Forks under the table. I can do Zis if i vant he declared. I can do Anyz ing i am wearing Zee olympic Gold medal and just before i sauntered away at speeds approaching 60 Kilometres per hour he flashed me what i believe was a medal belonging to Winnipeg olympic hero Clara Hughes who was standing nearby. The fish was excellent but you la understand Why i decided not to hang around and Chat. Still everybody had a great time and i hear the paper is willing to let me attend another Chari to dinner.
