By Lindsey Wiebe p patients in Winnipeg and across Canada have had radiation treatments and other procedures delayed because of a shortage of radioactive isotopes tiny particles needed to diagnose diseases like cancer. The unprecedented disruption was caused by a nuclear reactor shutdown in Chalk River ont. The reactor supplies most of the material for medical isotopes to hospitals worldwide. The Winnipeg regional health authority is still figuring out How Many patients will be affected said spokeswoman Heidi Graham but 31 people at the health sciences Centre have had treatments rescheduled so far. These Are elective patients not urgent said Graham who said the rescheduling will not affect the level of care. Winnipeg is turning to an alternate european supplier to get isotopes for emergencies and urgent cases. Graham said these cases also wont be affected by the shortage. Radioactive isotopes Are forms of chemical elements that Emit radiation. When injected into patients they allow imaging equipment to create detailed medical scans. The Warha does not yet know How Long people in Winnipeg May have to wait for treatment or How Many patients will have their tests rescheduled at five other affected hospitals St. Boniface Grace Victoria seven Oaks and Concordia. The hospitals do have other diagnostic procedures like it scans angiograms and mris that can be used in some cases Graham added. Were confident were going to be Able to manage in this situation she said. However staff at hospitals across the country expressed greater concern. Its a dire situation its been a huge scramble said or. Andrew Ross a nuclear Medicine physician at the qe2 health sciences Centre in Halifax. Hospitals in Montreal were cancelling treatments and tests for hundreds of patients because of the shortage. Some patients have resorted to private care instead of waiting for rescheduled appointments. Les Blatchford said he had been scheduled for a test for angina on tuesday but was called monday to say his appointment had been put off until dec. 18. He said his situation is not dire. He has managed to Book a test for Friday with a private clinic which he acknowledged is More costly big time. Already More than 100 patients in Halifax alone have had appointments put off indefinitely and the number will grow by about 30 a Day starting next week Ross said. In Toronto the three hospitals that make up the University health network have had to put most of their scans on hold. The Chalk River reactor operated by atomic Energy of Canada Ltd., produces molybdenum Ore. The Low Energy radioactive material is purified by ads no Dion and accounts for Between 35 and 45 per cent of the worlds medical Supply. Ads sends the refined product to suppliers who put it into a Generator in which the material Breaks Down into technetium which is used for the scans. The planned maintenance shutdown of the 50 year old Cru reactor was supposed to last from nov. 18 to nov. 23, but safety problems persist. Lindsey. Wiebe free press. My. Ca with files from Canadian press a attorney general Dave Chomiak knows As Well As anybody that Derek Harvey Zenk cannot be tried again for the death of Crystal Taman. At least not in a court of Law. In revealing the terms of reference for a judicial inquiry into the investigation and prosecution of Harvey Zenk Chomiak has set the stage for a full on trial in the court of Public opinion. The general Public is no doubt still reeling from the events of last month when Harvey Zenk a former Winnipeg police officer was Given a two year conditional sentence to be served in the Community for slamming his truck into the Back of a vehicle driven by Crystal Taman. She was killed and an angry disbelieving Public has demanded to know How Harvey Zenk could be spared a prison sentence. Wednesday Chomiak unveiled unusually Broad terms of reference for a judicial inquiry into the Case that could in theory answer All outstanding questions. He also unveiled his choices for commissioner and commission counsel. Roger Salhany a former Ontario Superior court judge and Legal scholar will run the inquiry. David Paciocco a top criminal lawyer and professor of Law at the University of Ottawa will serve As commission counsel. There should be Little concern about Salhany and Paciocco Chomiak did what he most needed to do by venturing outside the limited Gene Pool of Manitoba ass Legal Community for the inquiry yes key positions. And both Salhany and Paciocco Are the Type of lawyers other lawyers will respect. More noteworthy Are the extremely Broad terms of reference and Cho Miakos decision to arrive at the terms without convening a three ring circus of negotiations with the parties involved. The mandate of the Harvey Zenk inquiry As Chomiak noted will be left in Large part for the commissioner to forge. The attorney general has opened the door to everything and anything Salhany considers relevant to the Case. This will include the original police investigation by the East St. Paul police the decisions made by Independent prosecutor Marty Minuk and the services and consideration provided to the Taman family.
