Com Winnipeg free 10, 2007 q site frankly i should have known better. Write a column attacking two of the More treasured Canadian values Tim Horton Coffee and unbounded consumption of Fossil fuel and you pretty much get what you deserve. All last week it was a non Stop barrage of responses to a column dec. 3 applauding the Cit yes decision to Stop construction of a new Tim Horton drive thru restaurant on Taylor Avenue near Waverley Street. The decision was based on concerns expressed by other local businesses that feared traffic congestion and noise from the drive thru. I was silly enough to applaud the unintended and collateral benefits to the environment. Ill admit i was working on an Assumption that while Many readers would argue in favour of drive thus almost no one would argue that an idling car was anything less than an All out assault on the environment and a needless one at that. That is not to say there we rent readers who agreed with my thesis. Mirroring the results of a free press online poll on the same subject just Over half the responses agreed that drive thus were bad for the environment. However to say that others disagreed does not adequately describe the flood of people ready to deny not Only that drive thus harm the environment but that the environment itself is under assault. Some of these folks Are the civil libertarians who Are offended by any suggestions that any behaviour might be legislated away by government. Dan Lett does not seem to understand that All the people sitting in those cars idling away their wealth at tummies have exercised their subjective values and decided that the Gas Burnt and the time saved Are Worth it to them or they would not be there wrote Chris buoys. Living in a free country Means that we get to exercise bad judgment without being criminals so Long As we do not harm the person or the property of another. Ill admit now that among my Favourite guilty pleasures is listening to libertarians justify bad judgment others ill Call them the spawn of Rush Limbaugh denied the very existence of global warming. Have you looked out the window lately asked Reinhard Neufeld at the height of last weeks cold snap. Just because youve bought into the global warming fairy tale does not mean the City should shut out More businesses from operating. More interesting were readers who defended drive thus and pointed to other More harmful idling scenarios including gridlocked traffic cars lined up to pick up or drop off children at school cruise night for car enthusiasts and congestion in and around Bigboy retail outlets. Although not specifically noted in the column the worst aspect of Drivet Hrus is that they represent the least justifiable excuse for car idling. And that should not spare Drivers who unnecessarily Idle their cars in other scenarios. Mental note to self include Blanket condemnation of All needless idling in next column condemning drive thus. I will admit however to one notable exception to my general dislike of drive thus. Marilyn Hendzel who uses a wheelchair exposed the obvious benefits to handicapped persons who have trouble getting out of their cars and even if they did manoeuvre their wheelchairs while holding a scalding cup of Coffee. Drive thus allow me to have easy Access to places that i would t otherwise have in All kinds of weather Hendzel wrote. Although Access to a double double is not As essential to our lives As Access to a Hospital or grocery store i think Many of us even the environmentalists would endure some drive thru use by people using handicapped parking tags. Thankfully several readers suggested ways of making drive thus More environmentally Friendly. One suggested building a ramp so that cars would order Coffee at the highest spot and then coast through to the service window. Another suggested retrofitting the drive thru Lane with the conveyor mechanisms from automatic car washes. Many Many people suggested that Winnipeg ought to establish a stringent anti idling bylaw As Many other communities in Canada have done. The utter simplicity and brilliance of that suggestion is Tough to deny. Drive thus make compelling column fodder because they represent our worst environmental tendencies and How we would dare to compare the relative importance of convenience and environmental responsibility in the same sentence. Inadvertently the aforementioned Reinhard Neufeld made the most salient and most important Point of All the readers. Albeit in a rather backwards Way. The Day we can grow pineapples year round in Winnipeg i will Stop driving thru my local Tim Horton. Yes but by that time it will be too late. Dan. Lett free press. My.
