Com i love my family and i miss them terribly but not terribly enough to hop a plane Home for the holidays. I know that May sound cold and heartless but i believe Christmas is the worst time to visit. Every ones Busy every ones Over scheduled and almost every ones stressed out. Before we moved to Winnipeg Christmas eve Christmas Day and boxing Day were exhausting. My husband and i grew up in the same City Dartmouth n. S. Add up the Sisters brother and parents and we had six family Homes to visit Christmas Day not counting our own Home. We had a tight schedule to follow and if we fell behind we were in trouble. I remember walking into my momus House one Christmas afternoon to find her scowling and looking at her watch. We were late and she did not like having to wait for us to arrive. We tried to make everyone Happy but it was impossible. We be in two places at once let alone six places. One year i went on strike. I refused to leave my Home on Christmas Day. I said if you want to see me Yourd better come Here because ism not leaving. It worked Well. I highly recommend it. Some noses were out of joint for a while but nobody died. Nobody stopped Loving me or keeled Over because i did not see their tree on Christmas Day. I saw it boxing Day. It still looked Nice. This Day off from visiting did come with a Cost. I volunteered to make Christmas dinner for everyone both families. Come one come All. My very first time cooking a Turkey. What could possibly go wrong actually the turkeys the easy part. The hard part is the timing getting everything ready to hit the table at the same moment. This must go on the stove As that comes out of the oven. Its like air traffic control or Chainsaw juggling. The Cook has a pattern of movement planned. Throw something new in the mix especially with an inexperienced Holiday Cook like me and it can All come crashing Down into a bloody mess. The Factor i a snot prepared for the helping. My guests wanted to help. They needed to help. Females in my family Are trained from childhood to say what can i do at family dinners. Its not optional. We must ask. Males have the Tough Job of sitting in front of the to with the other Guys. They Are occasionally called upon to carry extra chairs in from other rooms but thatus about it. I should have been ready for the helpers. I should have assigned them tasks to make them feel useful and More importantly to keep them out of the Way. Its amazing How Small a Kitchen can become when its filled with people trying to help especially people who dont know where you keep anything. Now where would i find a knife do you have a cutting Board How about a composer do you compost these bits of pickles they look pretty in a fancy bowl. Do you have a fancy bowl i lost control of my Kitchen. I was so Busy finding dishes and utensils for other people i got nothing done myself. All my careful timing went out the window. When people saw me getting stressed they tried to help even More. Forget those new recipes id hoped to try. People jumped right in and prepared the food the same old Way the eyed always prepared it As i ran around getting them the ingredients they called out for. Maybe i should have stood up for myself. Maybe i should have screamed and yelled and banished them All from my Kitchen. Ism glad i did not. Its just a meal. Make delicious gourmet turnips and they might remember them for a week. Make a scene and remember it for years. Everyone had fun that Christmas even me once i stopped hyperventilating. The Turkey was moist the veggies were Plain and we were All still speaking to each other. I Learned valuable lessons that Day 1 the food does not matter. The people do 2 Cook stuff ahead of time. Reheating is your Friend and 3. Keep it simple sweetheart. See lesson 1. Of now ism homesick. Think its too late to get plane tickets. Janet Stewart Csc.
